Introduction

If you are exploring Chinese calligraphy classes for kids in Singapore, you are likely after more than a fun after-school activity. Many parents look for programmes that help children slow down, improve brush control, build patience, and develop a deeper appreciation of Chinese language and culture. The right class can also support focus, fine motor development, handwriting habits, and confidence, especially for children who enjoy art or respond well to calm, structured learning.

Across Singapore you will find centres with different approaches. Some focus on traditional brush techniques, others teach pen calligraphy, and a few combine calligraphy with broader exposure to Chinese art. Below is a compiled guide of 10 Chinese calligraphy centres, with concise overviews, Google reviews, locations, pricing, and contact details to help you compare options and find the best fit for your child.

While travelling through Singapore I attended a trial lesson in the Adult brush calligraphy class, with 林蔚老师. I had a wonderful time. I learned much in the 1.5 hrs. very good value for money. When I needed to enquire by email as a foreign visitor unable to pay online, I received quick replies and was able to pay at the class.
Thank you.

I wanted to share a review for this calligraphy center. Their classes are amazing! My ten-year-old daughter attended their brush and pen calligraphy, as well as Chinese painting, courses for a year and a half. We are extremely pleased with their offerings.

The teachers are fantastic—skilled, patient, and friendly. They create an engaging environment and establish a strong connection with the children. Under their guidance, my daughter participated in an elementary school calligraphy competition and even received an encouragement award.

The classes cover a wide range of topics and are enjoyable. Starting with basic strokes, they progress to writing Chinese characters and poems. The students learn proper brush handling techniques and even get the chance to explore Chinese painting.

I want to express my gratitude to the entire team at the calligraphy center for providing such a wonderful learning experience. We feel fortunate to have found them and will gladly recommend them to other parents. Thank you for your hard work!

Conducive environment for children to experience Chinese culture and language in a fun way. Was looking for a non-threatening Chinese environment for my boys and they both found the teachers awesome, clear and patient. We did oral, writing and calligraphy camp for my eldest and art and calligraphy for my youngest and both of them enjoyed their time so much we signed up for regular sessions.

My kids attended Moyuan since their school was at the Joo Chiat CC. The main goal was to learn calligraphy to let them have some quiet time and of course to enjoy art. The unexpected benefit was how they got to enjoy Chinese art and language through writing and speaking in mandarin with the teachers and I am quite happy with how they enjoy their creativity with the teachers. The teachers encouraged my elder daughter to attend competitions for exposure, and it was a great experience if character building for her.

Moyuan taught my daughter Chinese calligraphy, drawing, crafts, Chinese painting, and acrylic painting for a few years. As a result, my daughter won many art awards, but more importantly, she developed a strong interest in art. I would recommend Moyuan to anyone who wants to learn various forms of art.

The art teachers in the school are creative and often takes the children outdoors for sketching sessions, which really inspires them to observe the world around them. Each class usually begins with a story during the first hour, which encourages the kids to use their imagination and express it through their drawings. The teachers at the school are also very caring and supportive, creating a warm and nurturing environment for the children to grow and explore their creativity.

Highly recommended!
My children actually requested to come back for more!

As a parent, my main objective was to find a way to stimulate my two primary school children's interest in Chinese culture. After trying other cultural classes outside with no success, I am so glad we found Jiejie and Shi Chang.

Why the workshop perfectly met my objectives:
• Engaging Approach: The history and background were delivered in simple English. My children don't find it boring at all, likely because their way of teaching kept both my children captivated.
• Real hands on: I saw the instructor Shi Chang held onto each of their brushes for the first few strokes, and corrected them on the spot.
• Positive Response: The best proof was their reaction. They were happy with their art pieces they created and they asked to return.

I have just signed them up for a 4-lesson holiday package!

Honest & Professional Instructors:
When I asked about using the class to prolong my girl’s attention span, the instructors were very honest. They realistically explained that a 4-lesson package might be too short to see that specific change. I truly appreciated this fair, transparent approach rather than a sales pitch.

Exceptional value for money and a wonderful cultural hub for children!

Attended a 90 minutes introductory class with my dad using SG Culture Pass credits.

I had zero knowledge on Chinese calligraphy & learnt about the various scripts.

The lesson are structured, begins with explaining about delivering the correct stroke through the right sitting posture, apply the right pressure with our wrist and elbow.

The techniques explanation by Coach Ye & Shi Chang were clear and easy to understand, pointing out what needs to be corrected.

Overall we had a lot of fun.

Used the cultural credit to attend a beginner class taught by Shi Chang.

It was a very fun session and time flew without me even knowing. He taught us some history to the Chinese characters and hands on session to write the words on red paper.

Overall I learnt a lot and it really helps with practicing mindfulness.

Came here to try out calligraphy using my SG Culture Credit. It’s good for 1 trial introductory 1.5hr session. Was surprised this lady teacher is also a coach for many cabinet ministers and MPs.
The lady teacher was very friendly and patience with me. As I have ZERO knowledge of calligraphy.
I am happy that I managed to write a 吉 aka ‘LUCK’ Chinese character at the end of introductory session.
If u like calligraphy after this trial, they have package lessons that one can sign up.
Will consider doing so.

The two complimentary classes of foundational tree drawing and urban sketching is highly recommended for many beginners who have little or no background. This was given in response that the culture credits urban sketching class is not suitable for people who want to learn art in depth.

The teacher Wu is very patient, explains the strokes through words and demonstrations, and there is sufficient room for executing the techniques on the spot.

Materials are provided on the spot, trees of various shapes are practiced. Also, a few buildings and some techniques were tried out.

There is also motivation to apply the techniques and the application is doable.

However, sometimes the teacher can be really busy so it can help to remind the teacher that I am done so that the teacher doesn’t take too long to come back to me.

Also, the centre is pretty busy so they might not always reply promptly. I suggest that expanding research outside is crucial, such as pertaining to what type of markers or canvas to get etc.

Overall, I think this class is worth recommending to complete beginners and people with little background to go in depth and also have fun.

Through SG culture pass I took an incredibly enjoyable sketching class with the Visual Arts Centre. There were a couple of other attendees in the class with me and I was supervised by the attending artist instructor, Jade. She has an encouraging teaching style and made gentle tactful suggestions on how to improve my eye, how to hold the pencils, hatch lines, discern the contours of shadows, and proportion the objects in the fore and background. I was able to produce a sketch that both she and I were satisfied with! All materials were provided which made it a convenient class. The environment was air conditioned and there was classical music playing in the background. Meditative and nourishing for the soul.

Just completed an incredible creative learning journey art tour in Manila led by Jeffrey and lola, and I couldn't be more impressed!

Both of them were exceptionally knowledgeable and passionate, bringing the local art scene to life with their insights and enthusiasm. The tour was perfectly paced - we had ample time at each location to truly appreciate the artwork without feeling rushed. I particularly loved learning about the stories behind the pieces and how they beautifully reflect Filipino culture and history. Jeffrey and lola's expertise really enhanced our understanding of the contemporary art movement in the Philippines.

Whether you're an art enthusiast or simply curious about Manila's vibrant creative scene, this tour is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the culture. I left with a much deeper appreciation for Filipino contemporary art and several new favourite artists to follow.

I studied Mandarin at Han Hai Language Studio for a few months with no prior background, and in that time completed their HSK1, HSK2 and HSK3 modules. Han Hai was incredibly professional and flexible - adjusting to my scholarship requirements, my changing schedule, and even accommodating me when I was unwell. Grace (郭老师) was my main point of contact for enrolment and admin, and she was always responsive, professional, and supportive at every step.

Most of my classes were with Jordan (周老师), who not only guided me through the textbook but also helped me understand the cultural context behind the language. Thanks to him, my reading skills improved tremendously. I also worked with Timothy (王老师), focusing on revision and speaking. Timothy’s teaching gave me a strong foundation in Chinese grammar and vocabulary, and my confidence in speaking grew a lot.

I took both regular weekly classes while on exchange at NUS and then did a month and a half of intensive lessons afterwards. Han Hai addressed every concern I had and exceeded my expectations. The teachers genuinely cared about my progress and well-being, making me feel valued - almost like leaving a mini-family behind. I leave Han Hai with a much better command of Mandarin and a newfound interest in Chinese culture and language. Highly recommended!

During my exchange in Singapore, I had an amazing experience learning Mandarin with HanHai Language Studio. I’d like to thank my teacher, Timothy 王老师, for the incredible lessons each week. He teaches with great patience and is always approachable, creating a very supportive learning environment. What I appreciated most is how he brings each lesson to life by explaining the cultural and historical roots behind Chinese characters.

He often shares useful phrases and idioms beyond the textbook, which have helped me in day-to-day interactions and given me a deeper perspective on Chinese culture and values. You’re not just learning how to speak Chinese, but you’re also learning how to think in Chinese. Every lesson felt meaningful and enjoyable, and I always left feeling inspired to learn more.

Highly recommend HanHai to anyone keen to learn Mandarin in a way that’s both practical and culturally rich!

All their teachers are very skilled and kind. They know how to teach to kids to make learning interesting and fun! And they have always been very flexible in case of changes in her schedules and make up classes. Also the environment is very nice and welcoming!
Their holiday camps are great as part of the learning is in class and part done by trips to museums or art exhibitions, which my daughter found both interesting and fun.
I highly recommend Han Hai Language studio!

Chinese Calligraphy & Fine Arts Studio logo

Overview of the Business

Chinese Calligraphy & Fine Arts Studio focuses on teaching the ancient Oriental art of Chinese calligraphy. With a history stretching back about 4,000 years, this unique art form blends phonetic and ideographic techniques, offering both pleasure and a calm practice. For families, a distinctive aspect is that lessons are conducted in English to aid understanding while encouraging students to learn basic strokes and terms in Mandarin. The studio emphasises traditional techniques and aims to help learners appreciate the beauty of calligraphy while also picking up Mandarin. The benefits highlighted include serenity, calmness, good posture, and dexterity through regular practice, which will appeal to parents who want a more accessible environment for children new to calligraphy or less confident in Mandarin instruction.

Why Parents Choose Chinese Calligraphy & Fine Arts Studio

  • Lessons are conducted in English for better comprehension.
  • Students are encouraged to pronounce basic strokes and terms in Mandarin.
  • The classes are accessible for those without prior knowledge of Chinese.
  • Practice helps students appreciate calligraphy and learn Mandarin.
  • The studio promotes inner peace and enjoyment through calligraphy.
  • It emphasises serenity, calmness, good posture, and dexterity.
  • Students learn basic strokes and brush suspension from a skilled teacher.
  • The teaching approach focuses on slow and controlled brush strokes.
  • The emphasis is on enjoying the writing process rather than speed.

How to Choose the Best Chinese Calligraphy Class for Your Child

  • Teacher background: Look for centres that clearly share the instructor’s experience, training, or calligraphy credentials to understand who will guide your child.
  • Beginner suitability: If your child is new to brushwork, choose a programme that starts with fundamentals such as posture, brush grip, basic strokes, and character structure.
  • Age fit: Check whether the class is designed for your child’s age group, as younger children usually need more guided, age-appropriate instruction and pacing.
  • Teaching style: Some classes are highly structured, while others are more exploratory or art-based. Pick a style that matches your child’s personality and learning habits.
  • Focus of the programme: Decide whether you want emphasis on handwriting technique, cultural appreciation, creativity, or traditional art exposure.
  • Brush versus pen calligraphy: Know whether the class teaches brush calligraphy, pen calligraphy, or both, especially if you have specific goals for your child.
  • Class size: Smaller groups usually provide more individual attention, which helps with stroke order, spacing, and brush control.
  • Progression and structure: A clear curriculum helps parents see how skills develop over time, especially for children who like step-by-step learning.
  • Feedback and milestones: Look for centres that mention personalised feedback, projects, certificates, or visible progress markers to keep children motivated.
  • Learning environment: A calm, organised, and supportive space is important for calligraphy, as children learn best when they can focus without feeling rushed.
  • Materials provided: Check whether brushes, ink, paper, and other materials are included or need to be purchased separately.
  • Cultural depth: If cultural connection matters, consider whether the programme introduces characters, script styles, literary works, or historical context alongside technique.
  • Confidence building: The ideal class is often the one that helps your child feel successful and proud of steady progress, not necessarily the most advanced class.
  • Location and routine: Choose a centre that fits easily into your weekly schedule, especially if your child benefits from consistent attendance.
  • Price clarity: Before enrolling, verify whether quoted fees cover materials, registration, trial classes, or certificates to compare fairly.
  • Long-term fit: The best classes match your child’s pace, temperament, and interest, rather than following trends.

Looking for a Home Tutor Instead?

Some parents prefer one-to-one home tuition as an alternative to enrichment classes, particularly if their child learns more effectively in a quieter, personalised setting. Others may use home tuition to complement regular classes and provide extra support in Chinese or related academic areas. If this sounds like a better fit, MindFlex connects families with qualified home tutors across Singapore. It can be a practical option for parents seeking flexibility in schedule, location, and learning pace.

I’m very grateful to MindFlex, especially Alyssa and her team, for their patience and dedication in helping to source a suitable tutor for my son.

This is the 2nd time I look for them to source a tutor. This time round I had more specific requirements, including the tutor’s age group, gender and most importantly, someone who is patient and able to communicate well with students who are weaker in Chinese. Alyssa and the team were understanding, responsive and professional throughout the entire process.

They took the effort to carefully match a tutor who suits my son’s learning needs and personality. I truly appreciate their commitment and excellent service. Highly recommended for parents looking for reliable and attentive tuition support!

It has truly been a blessing to find Mr. Tan Tiam Teng as my son’s Chinese tutor. He is extremely knowledgeable, patient, and dedicated—qualities that have made a huge difference in my son’s learning journey. My Primary 4 son has shown remarkable improvement in his Chinese since starting lessons, and we are so grateful for the progress.

Beyond the academic results, Mr. Tan’s teaching style has built my son’s confidence and interest in the subject. He is punctual, pleasant disposition and understands what a child needs. The entire experience with Mind Flex has also been very pleasant, professional, and supportive.
