Introduction

If you are exploring Guzheng classes for kids in Singapore, it helps to look beyond convenience and find a programme that fits your child’s age, learning style, and musical goals. For many families, the guzheng is more than an instrument. It can be a way for children to build focus, discipline and confidence, while strengthening their connection to Chinese culture. Some children thrive in a warm, beginner-friendly setting. Others do better with structured progression, exam preparation or regular performance experience.

To help with your search, we have compiled a guide to 10 Guzheng centres in Singapore. Each entry includes an overview, Google reviews, location, pricing and contact details so you can compare options and make an informed choice for your child.

1. Eight Tones Music School Pte. Ltd.

Overview of the Business

Eight Tones Music School offers structured Chinese instrumental lessons for children, with a strong focus on helping young learners build musical skills while supporting their wider development. Its programmes are especially suited to children aged 5 to 12, a key stage for developing muscle memory, focus, coordination and cognitive skills. For younger children under seven, the school recommends Guzheng as an accessible starting instrument because it is easier to manage than some heavier Chinese instruments. Teachers can tailor the learning pace to each child, while lessons are designed to be interactive, enjoyable and progressive. Children can also gain cultural exposure, prepare for grading exams and school ensembles, and take part in optional performance opportunities as they grow in confidence.

  • Lessons help boost confidence and nurture social and emotional development.
  • Students can participate in performance opportunities, including annual showcases and music videos.

I have been learning from Teacher Liyang since around 2022, with a break in between due to a hand injury before returning to lessons again recently.

He is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the erhu, not just in playing technique but also in understanding the instrument itself. He has deep knowledge about setup, accessories, tonal adjustments, and how to modify the instrument to better suit a student’s playing style. During my return to lessons after my injury, he also helped adjust parts of my posture and modified some of the erhu accessories to better accommodate my limitations, which I really appreciated.

He also does not only have deep knowledge of the erhu, but other traditional instruments as well. During my very first trial lesson, he took time to walk me through some of the other instruments that I was interested in, which left a very positive impression on me.

He was also able to explain the different wood properties, python skin characteristics, and various parts of the instrument so that I could better understand how they affect the sound, tone, response, and overall quality of the erhu. This gave me a much deeper appreciation of the instrument beyond just learning how to play it.

I was also given opportunities to try some of his prized instruments, which really showed how much love and dedication he has for the craft.

I also appreciate that after going through a difficult passage thoroughly, he sometimes gives students a short moment alone to slowly absorb and process the section before coming back again to revisit it and straighten out any parts that are still unclear. Personally, I found this much more comfortable and effective than having someone constantly staring while I am trying to absorb or work through a difficult section.

His feedback can be blunt and straightforward at times which may come across as sharp to some people, but I personally appreciate the honesty because it comes from genuinely wanting students to improve.

Rather than giving flowery empty praise or encouragement, or simply saying “good job” when it is actually not, I genuinely feel constructive criticism is more valuable because this is where real improvement comes from, even though at times it may feel uncomfortable.

Lessons can be challenging, but I have learned a lot musically and gained a deeper appreciation and understanding of the instrument through his guidance.

I sincerely recommend Teacher Liyang to students who are genuinely serious and interested in learning, improving, and developing a deeper understanding and appreciation of the instrument.

It is hard to pick up a musical instrument like Erhu, so having professional guidance from professional teacher is the key for continous improvements. Have been learning Erhu from Teacher Hu(小胡老师) at Eight Tones for a few years, he is very professional and patient despite I produced out of tune noise with my Erhu at the beginner level. Througout the years, those techniques he genourously shared and taught really help me a lot in improving my Erhu performance.

My daughter is learning Guzheng with teacher Sze Ning, she's really great with kids and goes at their pace. We like that we can learn at a relaxing pace for the interest of the instrument and not for chasing a certification.

They have great flexibility with lesson planning as well. I dont get penalty just got changing lessons dates, unlike some other schools.

I live in the Netherlands recently purchased an Erhu from Eason Music Pte Ltd, and I can confidently say their service was nothing short of exceptional from start to finish.

From the moment I placed my order, Sung Wah and his team was in regular contact with me proactively assisting with every step, including the necessary permit arrangements. Every question I had was met with friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely helpful responses. It really felt like they cared about getting everything just right.

There was a small hiccup due to human error that would have delayed the arrival of my Erhu beyond when I needed it. But instead of making excuses, Eason immediately took responsibility and went above and beyond, they upgraded the shipping to express at their own cost to ensure I received it on time. That kind of integrity and customer care is rare and deeply appreciated.

As for the Erhu itself: absolutely outstanding quality. The craftsmanship, the tone, the attention to detail, everything exceeded my expectations. It’s clear Eason takes great pride in both their instruments and their service.

I would recommend them without hesitation to anyone looking for a high-quality Erhu and an impeccable customer experience. Thank you, Sung Wah and the whole Eason team.

My child had been taking lessons from Eason since P6. I had seen she had played and progressed well and took her annual grading exam with challenging music score with her instrument. This is closely attribute to the experienced instructors whom had guided her well all this years. The shop & school have well-stock arsenal and variety of Chinese music instruments and they are well known and connected in the in local scene. One of the few good 👍.

I recently acquired this beautiful early Yuan Shi Chun Liuqin (#7) which was originally bought from Eason Music by a fellow musician. I has made it to the United States where it now resides in my collection. Exploring the Eason web pages has provided a wealth of information on Chinese instruments and their history. I can tell Eason Music is the go-to location for all things wonderful related to Chinese musical tradition. Enjoy the photos of this wonderful treasure.

My daughter started learning (古镇) gu zhen here since she was 5. Initially she was not interested but the teachers here are very patient and committed. They make learning fun for kids, and I’ve seen a lot of improvement in her playing and grasp of music. my son will start learning when he is old enough.

I take lessons too, it has become a fun thing for my children and I on weekends, as well as playing the gu zhen at home.

We got our first gu zhen from here, it’s a very nice 40yrs old Sycamore in semi hollowed piece. Absolutely love it, it looks amazing under spotlight.

They don’t just offer musical instruments for purchase, they are actually more of a school for Chinese cultural arts. They teach Gu Zhen, Gu Qing and Chinese calligraphy.

I highly recommend this place to start your Gu Zhen journey. As for which Gu Zhen to buy, my advice is to ask if any of their teachers are available to demonstrate on a few, so that you can see which one looks and sounds the best to you.

I chanced upon Heritage String while window shopping at Marina Square one day and found the staff friendly and sincere attending to my queries. They didn't pressured me into signing up but suggested that I try their trial lesson before making a decision. I have been attending their lessons now and I am progressing well. They have great and experienced teachers and the lessons are conducted in a comfortable and conducive learning environment. I highly recommend Heritage Strings & Arts.

I recommended SHO music school to a friend after chancing upon it on Red. She brought her little one for trial classes and since then have started her little one on lessons.

My friend told me her little one is learning so much and making great progresses. Her interest in music has increased a lot, they noticed that she is a lot more motivated to practice at home too. The teacher is very patient and has good teaching methods for children. The school is also flexible with scheduling lessons, to fit her little one’s availability. It takes 24 hours lead time to reschedule which is very reasonable. I like that they don’t need to fix the time every week. The staff is very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful too.

I went to try their singing classes as well and decided to take on their singing class packages. The staff is so very friendly and approachable. The ambience is also great. They have a very good taste in their interior design which is a huge plus if you are here for the relaxing vibes.

Will definitely recommend this school to anyone.

I came in as a complete beginner and have now completed Grade 3, which honestly wouldn’t have been possible without his guidance.

Teacher Clarence is patient, encouraging, and very knowledgeable. Lessons are well-structured with a strong focus on fundamentals like chords and basic strumming, but he also goes beyond the curriculum. He introduced different strumming patterns and practical techniques that made learning more fun and musical, and gave me the confidence to jam with others, not just play on my own.

Huge shout out to Dawn, who is super helpful and accommodating — especially with juggling work, part-time studies, and other commitments. Both Clarence and Dawn really put in the effort to support students and make the learning experience forward-looking and motivating, especially for adult learners.

As an adult learner, I always felt comfortable, supported, and encouraged. Overall, it was a wholesome and very enjoyable experience. Highly recommend this school to anyone looking to start or continue their music journey!

Ms Foo provided my 5-year-old son with a solid and engaging introduction to music. The administrative staff were also extremely helpful, and the withdrawal process due to our relocation was very smooth. We hope to have the opportunity to return for lessons in the future.

I first signed up for a basic two-month kalimba class and later extended for another month to join the intermediate course. I had a wonderful time learning under Clarence and found myself looking forward to each Saturday lesson.

Although I’m in my early 60s and have little music background beyond what I learnt during my school days, Clarence was always patient and made every session enjoyable and easy to follow. He even went the extra mile to gift me the musical notes of a piece I had mentioned wanting to play one day — such a thoughtful gesture!

I’m also happy to share that my wife can now finally make sense of the tunes I play on the kalimba, haha.

Thank you once again to Clarence and the team for making this learning journey such a joyful experience. I’ll be sure to look for Clarence again when I’m ready to take on my next musical instrument.

How to Choose the Best Guzheng Class for Your Child

  • Teacher experience: Look for instructors who have solid teaching experience with children. Performance credentials are useful, but child-friendly teaching matters most for beginners.
  • Beginner suitability: Check that the class genuinely welcomes first-timers. Some programmes are better suited to students who already have musical experience.
  • Teaching style: Decide if your child learns best in a structured, exam-focused setting or in a more expressive, exploratory environment.
  • Class size: Ask whether lessons are one-to-one, small group or larger. Smaller formats usually allow more individual correction on technique.
  • Progression pathway: Make sure the centre offers a clear progression plan if you want exam preparation or steady advancement.
  • Language comfort: For younger children, verify whether lessons are in English, Mandarin or both, to help them feel confident.
  • Musical foundations: A good programme teaches posture, technique, rhythm, listening and music literacy, not just songs.
  • Performance opportunities: Consider whether your child enjoys performing, and if the centre offers suitable stage experiences.
  • Child’s goals: Be clear whether your child aims for enrichment, cultural exposure, exams or long-term musical growth.
  • Learning environment: A calm, organised and supportive setting helps children concentrate and progress.
  • Instrument access: If you do not own a guzheng, check whether the centre provides instruments for trials or practice.
  • Parent updates: Many families appreciate regular feedback and progress reports to track enjoyment and improvement.
  • Schedule and travel: Choose a class that fits realistically in your routine, as a far-away location can become tiring.
  • Price clarity: Confirm fees, trial lessons and any extra costs so you can compare options fairly.
  • Overall fit: The best class is the one that encourages, engages and motivates your child, not necessarily the most advanced or cheapest option.

I’m very grateful to MindFlex, especially Alyssa and her team, for their patience and dedication in helping to source a suitable tutor for my son.

This is the 2nd time I look for them to source a tutor. This time round I had more specific requirements, including the tutor’s age group, gender and most importantly, someone who is patient and able to communicate well with students who are weaker in Chinese. Alyssa and the team were understanding, responsive and professional throughout the entire process.

They took the effort to carefully match a tutor who suits my son’s learning needs and personality. I truly appreciate their commitment and excellent service. Highly recommended for parents looking for reliable and attentive tuition support!
