Update :

I am now a fitness and stability coach to a group of older women. I taught them how to break fall using modified judo techniques. Some of them immediately found the lesson useful as a) one fell on a slippery ground while traveling b) one fell while playing modified soccer. They all broke fall safely. These technical break fall techniques, I picked them up while practicing on the side at SA and Ryushinkan Shanghai. All my children are very active in sports and breaking fall has saved their ankles, shoulders, knees and elbows. Knowing judo also kept them very safe from would be bullies. They know they can protect themselves and each other when situation is requiring force. My daughter and her friends can confidently travel by themselves in Tokyo. My oldest son rehabilitates school bullies. I myself have fallen hard from a 29er to a concrete floor and escape injury by applying concepts from judo: spread force over bigger area. Another time, a well built rugby player charged in my direction while I was crossing the Downtown Lawn. Judo enabled me to stand firm to face a crazed western man; he will not return to practice rugby at the Lawn (judo teaches you to safely process intense and unexpected situation).

Judo at SA is the gold standard in Spore, for kids, adults and seniors (seniors should go for seniors’ only class; they may not have a class for seniors now but no harm asking!)

Y’all should know: the grand sensei Tang of SA learned judo from a Japanese judo champion (the one with shoulder injury) - a master from the golden era of judo. Japanese judo remains the gold standard. Y’all can learn the classical-golden era- judo at Lorong Kilat! People have gone all the way to the Tokyo Kodokan for proper black belt instructions - min of 6 months; Kodokan judo is 30 mins away from you. Caveat : while the two daughters teaching at SA are amazing, the founder of SA judo -grand sensei Tang - is exceptional. My daughter Bel nearly picked up a back throw (Tomo-nage), under his and the eldest daughter’s instruction, before she suffered a gymnastics injury.

Post 10 months ago:
I have had the pleasure of indirectly learn judo from the masters. When sending 2+1 of my children to this academy, I was watching and practicing by the sideline with Lucas. Fast forward 3 years, I was able to apply judo stability and submission techniques to safely subdue and tire out a street bully. I harmlessly released him after he was completely exhausted. SA judo teaches classical judo techniques - perfect for real world application, including self advancement, fitness and aging protection.

A great place to learn judo with tailored approaches for varying levels of experience. The club offers an array of classes to provide a safe and conducive environment for beginners to advanced practitioners of the sport. The dojo itself has great facilities with experienced instructors. Would strongly recommend.

Exceptional Dojo with highly experienced and decorated instructors. As a former athlete seeking to delve into a new sport, this dojo proved to be the perfect blend of intensity and education. Crucially, for someone like myself who has endured severe knee injuries in the past, the instructors prioritize safety measures above all else, which I really appreciated.
If you’re a beginner, special belts are provided to alert senior members in the class to exercise additional caution. It is also mandatory that all beginners attend at least three sessions with an instructor to focus solely on learning breaking falls.
With that said, Judo is undeniably an intense and physically demanding sport (especially for someone my age hahaha), but if you’re looking to break out a good sweat and learn a unique martial art, this Dojo is wonderful.

Facilities are quite good. As beginners, we joined sparring within 6 classes which I feel was not adequate enough as we did not have enough practice falling for which I had to suffer from with an ACL injury and the surgery afterwards. Do make sure you are comfortable sparring with your partner and choose one that is more experienced than you as if you spar with white belts you will be put at risk. Would not recommend this academy for beginners who are not children. Also did not appreciate the "judo is not for everyone" comment, essentially putting the whole blame on me, perhaps your teaching approach isn't for everyone. At least I got a refund which was expected due to injury but any other reason would not have been accepted as mentioned in the T/C you accept before signing up.

This is the place that has expanded my world view and shaped me to be a better person, both physically and mentally. In the Dojo coaches instill discipline and push us to go further, and through judo we learn respect and gain confidence in ourselves.

In my time training I have seen the coaches truly make an effort to nurture the talent within every student making sure that each and everyone of them can reach their fullest potential both in judo and as a person.

I fully believe that with the coaches and community here I have been able grow with each and every session, growing myself and developing my skills.

Martial arts is a life long journey and the community that's established is here is undoubtedly the best in Singapore.

My experience with the Dojo's coaches has been very positive, and my family always looks forward to a great training session when we visit. If you are looking for a professional, structured learning environment with good vibes, do consider The Dojo 100%.

I have known Tan Yi and been personally coached by him since 1997. Over the years, he has shown to be an excellent coach both on and off the mats. More than just coaching in the fundamental judo techniques, he also taught me (and my classmates back then) to be honest and upright whenever we are competing. I came back to doing Judo 3 years ago after "retiring" for many years and the nurturing environment is still the same. More than just a judo coach, Tan Yi is someone i consider my life coach as well. Highly recommended

Had a really fun time at Elite Coach. If you’re worried about going alone or feeling lost during your first class, honestly don’t be. The coaches are super friendly, approachable, and really know what they’re doing.

I took the Muay Thai class and enjoyed every minute of it. The techniques taught were practical, easy to follow, and the cardio was tough but fun. If you’re looking to train, learn proper Muay Thai or boxing, and meet new people along the way, this is definitely the place to check out.

My child loves this student care center. The environment is very pleasant and teachers there are very positive and passionate.

She couldn't stand Big Hearts in her sch. After 6 months, we let her quit and she stayed home since. We went to this center's open house. She likes it so enrolled her in Happy Learners holiday camp. She went for a day and 💕 it. Now she is so looking forward going to Happy Learners daily. She is there for 3 weeks and still her motivations going to the center remains.

We will enroll her into their after school studentl care service with the center. The funny part is my child always drag when going to school/childcare but we were so surprised she can get herself ready on time to go Happy Learners.

We enrolled her to the after school since she have been doing very well and enjoy her stay. It is a huge difference compared to her previous student care where she always complained and refused to go.

We are incredibly grateful for Happy learners for the tremendous impact it has had on our two sons' academic journey.

Having been through 3 other different care centers where they have missed out homework after returning home or are afraid of the teachers, i am glad that they have now been happily going to Happy learners.

Since joining the student care, we have seen improvements in his school grades, and he now has a increased enthusiasm and habit for reading books.

The caring staff and comfortable envoronment at Happy Learners have not helped nurtured our 2 sons to be joyful learners who feels supported and motivated.

Thank you Happy Learners, for their dedication towards fostering the growth of the young learners. I am truly thankful for finqlly being able to find such a great place for the my sons after their primary school.

I am so impressed with the Happy Learner Student Care Centre! The staff are warm, caring, and dedicated to providing a nurturing environment for the children. My grandchild has thrived under their care, and I've seen significant improvements in her social skills.

The centre's facilities are clean, safe, and well-maintained, providing a comfortable space for the children to learn and play. The programmes and activities are engaging, fun, and tailored to meet the needs of each child.

What sets Happy Learner apart, however, is the exceptional communication and support provided by the staff. They keep me informed about my child's daily activities, meals, and progress, giving me peace of mind while I'm at work.

The most important part, every morning my granddaughter looks forward to go to the centre and ask me not to fetch her too early 😂😂😂

Overall, I highly recommend Happy Learner Student Care Centre to any parent seeking a trustworthy, reliable, and nurturing environment for their child.

How to Choose the Best Judo Class for Your Child

  • Coach experience: Look at qualifications and teaching background. Proper instruction matters because children need to learn technique and safety habits well from the start.
  • Beginner suitability: Check if the programme truly welcomes beginners. Some children need a gentler introduction with clear guidance.
  • Safety approach: Ask how falling, rolling, and safe training are taught. Good classes build confidence without making children feel unsafe.
  • Age-appropriate teaching: Make sure the class matches your child’s age, attention span, and physical stage.
  • Class size: Smaller classes let coaches give individual corrections and support quieter children who need encouragement.
  • Training environment: Consider whether the space feels welcoming and organised, and whether discipline is enforced in a positive way.
  • Teaching philosophy: Some centres focus on competition, others on character or community. Pick the approach that fits your child’s temperament and your family’s goals.
  • Progress and milestones: Ask how progress is tracked. Grading, milestones, and regular feedback keep children motivated and help parents track development.
  • Character development: If values like respect, self-control, and resilience matter to you, choose a programme that consistently reinforces them.
  • Child confidence level: A gentle, encouraging class often suits a shy beginner, while a confident child may enjoy a more challenging structure.
  • Schedule and location: Choose a class that fits your routine. Convenience helps keep attendance consistent.
  • Trial classes and fee clarity: Take a trial class if offered, and check that pricing and any extra costs are clearly explained before you commit.

Looking for a Home Tutor Instead?

Some parents compare enrichment classes with one-to-one support at home, especially if their child has a busy schedule or learns better with personal attention. Home tuition can complement sports and enrichment by providing tailored academic support outside regular activities. If that option interests you, MindFlex connects families with qualified home tutors across Singapore, which may suit parents wanting personalised learning arrangements.

I’m very grateful to MindFlex, especially Alyssa and her team, for their patience and dedication in helping to source a suitable tutor for my son.

This is the 2nd time I look for them to source a tutor. This time round I had more specific requirements, including the tutor’s age group, gender and most importantly, someone who is patient and able to communicate well with students who are weaker in Chinese. Alyssa and the team were understanding, responsive and professional throughout the entire process.

They took the effort to carefully match a tutor who suits my son’s learning needs and personality. I truly appreciate their commitment and excellent service. Highly recommended for parents looking for reliable and attentive tuition support!

It has truly been a blessing to find Mr. Tan Tiam Teng as my son’s Chinese tutor. He is extremely knowledgeable, patient, and dedicated—qualities that have made a huge difference in my son’s learning journey. My Primary 4 son has shown remarkable improvement in his Chinese since starting lessons, and we are so grateful for the progress.

Beyond the academic results, Mr. Tan’s teaching style has built my son’s confidence and interest in the subject. He is punctual, pleasant disposition and understands what a child needs. The entire experience with Mind Flex has also been very pleasant, professional, and supportive.
