The transition from Primary 6 to Secondary 1 is often a huge wake-up call for many families in Singapore. Just when you think your child has conquered the PSLE hurdle, they are suddenly thrown into a whole new academic landscape where English is no longer about filling in the blanks or memorising structured templates. Lower secondary English demands mature inference, critical analysis in comprehension, and essay writing that requires genuine depth and personal voice. It is very common to see children who easily scored AL2 or AL3 in primary school suddenly struggling to pass their first few secondary class tests. If you are currently comparing Secondary 1 English Tuition options, finding the right support early can make this big adjustment much smoother for your child, and far less stressful for you. Some tuition centres focus heavily on essay writing and summary skills, some build public speaking and oral confidence, while others offer the dedicated attention of one-to-one home tutoring. This guide brings together 10 reliable options in Singapore, alongside a flexible home tuition platform, to help you compare teaching styles, class sizes, fee structures, and find the perfect match for your child's learning needs.
Key Takeaways
Effective Secondary 1 English tuition focuses on helping children adapt to higher-level critical thinking, inference, and mature writing, rather than just drilling repetitive worksheets.
Every tuition centre has a unique approach, class size, and teaching style, meaning the best fit depends entirely on your child's learning personality.
Before committing to a programme, assess where your child needs the most help, whether it is summary writing, oral communication, comprehension skills, or essay structure.

1. illum.e
Overview of the Business
illum.e is an MOE-registered tuition centre in Singapore known for its focus on English, Humanities and General Paper. For Secondary 1 English tuition, its lower-secondary programme helps students manage the transition from upper primary to secondary school, where reading passages, comprehension questions and writing tasks become more demanding. Lessons focus on strengthening grammar, comprehension, vocabulary, summary skills and written expression, while also helping students think more clearly before answering. illum.e’s Thinking Frames approach gives students structured methods to analyse questions and organise ideas, which can be useful for Sec 1 learners adjusting to higher expectations in school English.
Why Parents Choose illum.e
Parents may choose illum.e for Secondary 1 English because the programme supports students at a key transition point. Many children enter secondary school with decent language basics but struggle when answers require more inference, explanation and precision. illum.e helps students build stronger grammar foundations, clearer comprehension techniques and more organised writing habits. Its Thinking Frames method may also benefit students who need step-by-step guidance instead of vague advice to “write better”. With small classes, physical centres and online options available, illum.e offers a structured English programme for students settling into secondary school.
Before joining illum.e, I was scoring badly for GP up until promos in J1. I did not understand how GP worked and what was even required to score well in GP. After joining illum.e in J2, Mr Chia and Mr Yeo's lessons made me understand that GP was actually very much doable. Mr Chia and Mr Yeo would also always make the extra effort to help me mark and provide feedback on areas for improvement promptly. Would definitely recommend anyone considering a GP tuition centre to join illum.e!
I enrolled into Illume in 2024 in Mr Chia and Mr Yeo class at Jurong East campus, and throughout the 1.5 years in illume, I managed to improve my GP significantly through the structured classes and lectures. The lesson materials were useful since it provided easy to remember methods and strategies to tackle the broad subject requirements. Additionally Mr Chia and Mr Yeo were engaging and frequently put in the effort to make our lessons fun and interesting. Furthermore, Mr Chia and Mr Yeo would take time to consult with us and check our essay outlines or comprehension questions outside of lesson hours or during exam periods, even if they were very busy. Overall, illume has helped me not only in scoring an A for GP but also equip me with general knowledge about local and global affairs, which are valuable when entering the workforce in the future.
Mr Chia played the biggest role in helping me achieve an A for GP during my A Levels. Before attending his classes, I was completely clueless about how to write good essays, as the help given by my school teachers was too vague and confusing. I am very grateful to Mr Chia, who taught me how to use illum.e’s very own skill sets to dissect question types and keyword types, which are the keys to answering any type of essay question.
I truly appreciate that in every single lesson, Mr Chia made it a point to review every student’s answers and provide personalised feedback to target the weaknesses in our responses and teach us how to improve. I also liked that he engaged with his students in class to ensure that we were following him and to liven up the atmosphere. I was also pleasantly surprised when I wrote at least three additional essays for Mr Chia to mark and he returned them to me with fully annotated scripts showing where I could improve. Every piece of feedback was immensely useful. (He was not obliged to mark them at all.) This showed his dedication and responsibility towards helping his students.
As for comprehension, I went from barely passing to getting an A during prelims. Similarly, I would credit this improvement to Mr Chia. He was very encouraging, even when the class struggled to paraphrase certain words.
Finally, even though I only joined his classes in April of J2, I was able to see myself doing better in GP at school after applying the feedback Mr Chia gave. This shows how experienced he is in knowing exactly what his students need to do to perform better in the subject.
I 100% recommend juniors who feel uncertain about GP to join!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My English teacher, Mr. Chia from Illum Education (Jurong East), played a huge role in helping me achieve a B3 in my National Examinations.
When I first joined in mid-May, I was barely passing with around 50 marks. Even close to Prelims in late July, I was still stuck at 55 and extremely worried about my actual exams. After consulting Mr. Chia, the improvement I saw within just three weeks was honestly insane.
He didn’t just teach me content; he fixed my exam strategy. For Paper 1 (especially Situational Writing), I used to write the wrong things and overwrite. He taught me how to write less but include the right points to score higher. For Paper 2, I used to struggle to find answers in the passage, but after his guidance, it became much easier.
What really stood out was his care and dedication. Despite being busy, he still took time to mark my extra work and patiently answer my questions after lessons. He always checked in to make sure I had no doubts.
If you want results, Mr. Chia is the teacher you need. Highly recommended.
Mr Roger was my teacher at Illum.e. I joined midway through Sec 4, and many people questioned why I decided to start tuition so close to my O Levels. Previously, I believed I could self-study and still achieve a good grade for English. However, after receiving my WA1 and WA2 results, I realised my grades were declining from a C6 to a D7. That was when I told my mum that I needed tuition.
During my time at Illum.e, I learnt a lot from Mr Roger. He always took the time to explain every detail clearly, especially words or concepts that students were unsure of. Beyond that, Illum.e taught us how to approach questions based on what markers are actually looking for. This helped me understand how to answer effectively without overthinking or overwriting during exams.
As a result, I was able to manage my time much better in my actual O Levels. I am truly grateful to Illum.e and for my own hard work, which helped me achieve a B3 for my English O Levels.
My child’s English grade improved significantly from E8 to an A, and we are extremely grateful to illum.e.
After just one visit, we decided to entrust our child to the centre, and it proved to be the right decision. The staff at the Jurong East branch were warm, supportive, and professional, and Mr. Roger’s guidance made a tremendous difference. June felt comfortable and well-supported throughout her learning journey.
The materials provided were relevant and effective, and the team was always helpful and flexible in arranging make-up classes or alternative schedules when needed.
Thank you, illum.e, and especially Mr. Roger, for your dedication and commitment to our child’s O-Level success. We truly appreciate all your hard work.
I was a student of illume in 2025 ( I joined halfway throught the year) for the subject GP. I was taught by MrLiew and his lessons were wonderful. His lessons are always well prepared and MrLiew always make sure all his explanations are well elaborated in a way that is clear and easy to understand for everyone. MrLiew is also very patient and takes time to explain the mistakes that I and other students make. Before illume, I was very weak in GP and did not understand how to properly structure my essays, AQ and the SAQ formats, but thanks to MrLiew, I have a much much netter understanding especially for SAQs which really helped me improve in GP and i jumped 3 grades from mid years to prelims. MrLiew has greatly helped me in this short span of a few months!

Augustine's English Classes is a premium English tuition centre in Singapore specialising in Primary English, Secondary English, and JC General Paper (GP). Every class is personally taught by Teacher Augustine, ensuring students benefit from consistent teaching, clear expectations, and a carefully structured curriculum. The programmes are designed to help students build strong language foundations while mastering the techniques required for school and national examinations. Lessons go beyond simply completing worksheets—they develop critical thinking, reading comprehension, writing, and communication skills that students can apply confidently in any classroom. With small class sizes and a focused learning environment, every student is encouraged to participate, think independently, and grow academically. The centre's philosophy is simple: meaningful improvement comes from structured teaching, proven strategies, and helping students become confident, capable learners.
Why Parents Choose Augustine's English Classes?
Parents choose Augustine's English Classes because they know exactly who will be teaching their child—every lesson is conducted personally by Teacher Augustine. There are no rotating tutors or changing teaching styles, allowing students to progress through a consistent, carefully planned curriculum. Lessons focus on building genuine understanding rather than memorisation, equipping students with practical strategies they can apply confidently in examinations. Small classes encourage active participation, individual feedback, and meaningful interaction. Many parents also value the centre's organised approach, high expectations, and commitment to nurturing independent learners who continue to improve long after the examinations are over.
My son joined Augustine’s English Classes after PSLE as his English results were quite weak, and we were worried about the transition to secondary school.
After a few months with Teacher Augustine, we could already see a big improvement in the way he handled comprehension and writing questions. He became much more confident and knew how to answer with better precision instead of simply guessing.
We were honestly very surprised when he scored an A1 for his first Sec 1 WA.
Teacher Augustine is very experienced and teaches in a very clear and systematic way. The students are pushed to think properly and understand how to approach questions, which made a big difference for my son.
My son joined Augustine’s English Classes at the start of P6. He was getting AL6 in P5. After a year with Teacher Augustine, he achieved AL3 for PSLE English. Lessons were structured and clear. My son understood better how to answer comprehension questions and organise his ideas for composition. He was also more confident going into exams. Based on our experience, I would recommend this tuition centre to other parents.
We signed up because P5 English was getting too hard to manage, and it’s been a solid help. My son finally understands how to tackle comprehension and organise his compositions. He’s more confident and more consistent with his English work. Steady progress, less stress. It’s been a good support for him.
We joined Augustine’s English Classes earlier this year, and the difference has been very clear. My child actually understands what he’s doing now — especially in comprehension and writing. The techniques are practical, not the usual “memorise this” style we’ve seen elsewhere.
What I appreciate is how Teacher Augustine explains things. He’s very direct, very clear, and the students know exactly what’s expected. My child always comes home talking about how “the method works” or how he finally understands why he lost marks in school papers.
The classes are well-run, the environment is positive, and you can tell there’s a lot of experience behind how each lesson is structured. It’s still a group class, but Augustine manages the students well and makes sure everyone keeps up.
Overall, it’s been a very good experience for us. My child enjoys the lessons, shows improvement, and — most importantly — is more confident using the techniques in school. I can see why many parents recommend this centre.
I would like to share my positive experience with Augustine's English Classes. Thanks to their dedicated teaching and support, my son significantly improved his English skills, ultimately achieving an A1 in his Sec 3 English exams. The effective teaching methods and unwavering commitment truly make this tuition center stand out. Grateful for the positive impact on my son's academic journey. Highly recommended!
My daughter started attending Augustine's English Classes in January of this year. I'm glad that her English has improved significantly, especially her composition. Her confidence in learning English has also increased. Teacher Augustine has a unique way of teaching and encouraging students. My daughter is very motivated and enjoys his classes. The classroom environment is comfortable, and there is a little entertainment before class for students to decompress. I am extremely pleased with my decision to choose this tuition centre for my daughter's education.
Mr Augustine is a passionate teacher who teaches from the heart and strives to help students reach their full potential. His lessons are fun and interesting. He tries to keep his classes small so that he attend to each and every student's query. My son really enjoys his lessons and look forward to attending his classes. Most of all I can see great improvement in his grades.

My P4 child attended the 1st day of a 2 day June holiday workshop on language builder and he enjoys it alot. Materials are well structured. It is a good revision for him and the teacher is friendly and supportive.
Teacher Saha is a dedicated and thoughtful educator who creates an engaging and supportive learning environment. His lessons are well structured, clear and encouraging, making learning both enjoyable and meaningful. He gives constructive and detailed feedback that helps students grow in confidence and skill, and his passion for teaching is evident.
More importantly, my younger son found the environment conducive and the lesson engaging, and he shared that it didn’t feel long or boring at all. That really says a lot about how the lesson was conducted!
We like that the centre is very structured. The worksheets are well prepared and the step-by-step approach really helps guide the children in their learning.
A special shout out to Teacher Jenny and Teacher Shabana, who teach my twins in separate Primary 2 classes. Both are patient, caring, and make learning enjoyable.
Teacher Vani was very patient with me throughout the entire journey, from the time i told her that i wanted to retake my o levels to the end of o levels, she would check in on me and encourage me to focus on my o levels. Even though it was challenging at the start, as i have already learnt most of the things. im really glad to have her by my side journeying alongside me. she is very understanding and encouraging. i was honestly very shocked when i got my results as i did not expect this results:)) im very appreciative towards teacher vani for putting in so much effort into making sure her students are well equipped. thank youu
Teacher Saha was very encouraging and supportive, and helped to boost my child's confidence in English. I would definitely recommend enrolling your child here as the teachers provide helpful tips and lessons are engaging! Additionally, through English lessons, my child developed relevant skills on how to tackle difficult questions, and as a result, she was able to perform her best in the PSLE. This tuition centre will definitely help your child to improve considerably and I can assure you that it is worth it!
Teacher Saha is a very caring and a kind teacher. He updates and gives feedback to parents of the child's progress. My daughter, Shiva, likes Teacher Saha and looks forward to his class. Her English grades are also great after coming to Lil but Mighty. Thank You Teacher Saha.
Mr Saha is a dedicated teacher, and never fails to help his students who needed additional help in their English. He provided Jenyce with extra coaching during his break time in between his lessons for the PSLE oral exam preparation, which boosted my child's confidence. On other days, he would always reply to our questions that were sent over AQ connect, in timely manner. Many of our doubts were clarified! Mr Saha comes across to us as a knowledgeable teacher, and confident in his teaching. He always encourages Jenyce to do well and have confidence in herself. He is indeed a STAR teacher in the centre!
Thank you! From Jenyce & Jenyce's mummy

My son has been with TAS since Primary 2 and he was privileged to have Teacher Elaine and Teacher Joanne teaching him. Teacher Elaine is always ensuring I am kept updated on his progress and she takes time to have calls with me to go through his weak areas and how she intends to help him. It also helps that her method of teaching is well received by my son and he listens to her and applies accordingly. Teacher Joanne took on my boy when he was entering into the PSLE year. Initially, I was concerned that his learning will be affected but he was very contented to stay on with Teacher Joanne. Teacher Joanne has gone beyond herself to ensure the my boy is always encouraged and motivated. She has also provided meaningful advice and insights on how I can support my boy at home. My son has managed to hold his consistent performance under her guidance and he scored AL1 for his PSLE. Special shoutout to both Teacher Elaine and Teacher Joanne for both their dedication and unwavering support.
We are incredibly grateful to have Tr Elaine teaching both my boys. She is such a dedicated and caring English teacher and consistently goes above and beyond for her students — often giving extra lessons on her own time for the psle kids and patiently working with them on their weak areas until they improve.
What we appreciate most is how intentional she is about understanding each child’s needs and tailoring her guidance accordingly. Her commitment, encouragement and belief in her students truly make a difference.
Under her watch and guidance, my son Elliott managed to score an AL2, which we are extremely thankful for. This achievement would not have been possible without her time, effort and genuine dedication.
Highly recommended to any parent looking for a teacher who truly cares about her students’ growth and progress!
It’s been such a good journey with TAS (AMK Branch). My daughter has been with them since P3 and took the regular English class that covers Paper 1, Paper 2, and Oral. I never had to worry about whether everything would be covered—their programmes are well-structured and organised. The materials are detailed yet concise, and easy for students to understand and use.
A special shout-out to Teacher Andy. My daughter genuinely enjoyed his lessons. He’s encouraging, keeps the kids engaged, and provides regular, clear feedback so we can work on her weaker areas together. His guidance was consistent and practical.
Under his guidance, my daughter achieved AL1 in her 2025 PSLE English. She was over the moon when she saw the result, and we were so proud. We’re truly grateful for Tr Andy’s commitment, care, and dedication.
I would like to express my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Teacher Dione for her dedication, patience, and support. She has been teaching my son, Gareth, since Primary 4 at TAS Jubilee Square. When Teacher Dione moved to the Djitsun Mall branch, my son chose to follow her as he likes her teaching style.
During the PSLE period, Teacher Dione went above and beyond by providing extra lesson to ensure the students were well prepared. She consistently gave constructive feedback to parents and made efforts to encourage him to participate more in class and speak up, especially since he is weaker in oral skills and tends to be quiet. Her encouragement and belief in him helped to build his confidence.
Under her good guidance, my son was able to achieve AL1 in his PSLE 2025. We are truly grateful for Teacher Dione’s commitment, care, and dedication. Thank you very much.
I would like to express my deepest appreciation to Teacher Phoebe from The Alternative Story for her outstanding dedication and effort in teaching my son. Thanks to her guidance, encouragement, and clear teaching methods, he achieved an amazing AL2 for his PSLE.
Teacher Phoebe is exceptionally patient, supportive, and attentive to her students’ needs. She takes the time to understand each child’s strengths and areas for improvement, and she teaches with a warmth that helps students feel confident and motivated. Her ability to make lessons engaging, structured, and clear has made a huge difference in my son’s learning journey.
We are truly grateful for her commitment, positivity, and passion for teaching. Thank you Teacher Phoebe, for believing in him and helping him reach this wonderful milestone. We couldn’t have asked for a better teacher.
My son has been taking lesson with Teacher Michelle from the beginning of the year. He really likes her teaching style and always enjoys learning under her guidance. Despite attending online, Teacher Michelle never fails to engage the students well and always gives clear explanations. Offering comprehensive academic programmes from primary school all the way to Junior College, they provide an excellent option for parents looking for Secondary 1 English Tuition. Their secondary English programme is structured, exam-focused, and highly aligned with the latest MOE syllabus, covering essay writing, reading comprehension, and oral communication. While Future Academy has a strong reputation in Mathematics and Science, their English curriculum is equally rigorous and designed to help students master critical answering techniques. Their small-group environment allows tutors to offer personalised attention, helping students transition smoothly into the academic demands of secondary school while managing multiple subjects under one roof.
Why Parents Choose Future Academy?
Parents are drawn to Future Academy because of the high calibre of their teaching staff, many of whom are experienced ex-MOE teachers with a deep understanding of exam trends. The small class format ensures that each student's individual learning gaps are addressed, which is especially useful for Secondary 1 students who are struggling with vague writing habits or weak reading comprehension skills. Families also appreciate the convenience of having multiple high-quality academic subjects taught under one roof, making class scheduling much easier for busy secondary school students juggling heavy timetables and CCA commitments.
My tutor is nice caring and supportive and she’s a very good teacher and help brush up my math. She goes the extra mile in guiding me. Highly recommended.
I go to tuition here for Math lessons. Ms Yvonne Chen is very helpful and patient with her students and always stops to ensure everyone understands the content fully before continuing. Under her guidance and help my math results have steadily improved and i strongly recommend anyone looking for tuition to attend Future Academy.
I attended class here when my GPA for math was very bad. In Y2 I managed to get a 4.0 after one year of lessons! Very grateful for the entertaining and enriching lessons. There is also good use of digital tools to enhance learning, even if one cannot make it physically, they are able to attend the lesson online in a way that is equally educational.
It is amazing, the teachers are great there and I really enjoyed it. I really recommend it because it helped me with my math a lot and it is a very good place to learn. I think it was very good that I chose to go here because it was so worth it. I felt very safe and I could ask any question, and they would help explain how to get to the answers. I think that it was very amazing that they print sheets for you to work on based on what your doing and I think that was a thing I had never seen before. I think they have amazing teachers and the teachers would sit down with you and explain each question you did not understand. It really helped me improve in math and I think it got me more confident in myself and not wondering if I was right, and instead knowing I am right. It was really great and I think Ms. Chen is a great teacher.

Tutor explained the science concepts very clearly making it very easy for me to understand. Tutor is engaging during class which helps to make lessons interesting. Revisions before EOY exam helped me to be prepared and confident to do well for Science.
As a parent, I’m deeply grateful for the help and guidance from Mr. Phua to my child who is doing IP3/4 Biology. He was able to understand her personality and learning challenges even before the first tuition session began. Despite the limited class availability, the opportunity he provided became a valuable stepping stone toward better grades.
My child always looks forward to her lessons here — it feels like a happy cave for her. To see her go from “Did I choose the wrong science subject?” to “Maybe one day I’ll become a biology teacher!” truly shows the positive impact Mr. Phua has had on his students.
Once again, thank you OM and Mr. Phua. I’m genuinely impressed and deeply appreciative.
I attended the Sec 3 EOY Intensive Revision for E and A math conducted by Mr Jason Yek. His lessons were engaging and he showed dedication in his teaching throughout the session. I usually feel stress a lot when exam but not here. The staff guided me nicely, everything run on time. The exam room is very comfortable, quiet enough to focus. Waited around maybe 10–15 min before start, not big deal, as staff update and it’s actually nice to chill a bit first before exam.
I needed ielts for a UK work visa. A friend recommended that I take it at the British Council, since her experience was good. I’m super stoked that I did as the staff is very professional and facilities are well set-up. On test day, security is quite strict but it’s understandable lah since it’s an examination. Ohh, it was also near the Napier mrt, just a quick walk. Would definitely recommend for anyone who wants to take IELTS.
I took my IELTS at the British Council and I was actually happy with the overall experience. It was near the Napier MRT and also there’s quite a few food options, important to keep my tummy fuel on exam day. Staff is so chill and explain the step, place is good as well. Like other reviews mentioned, the room was cold tho, so I make sure to bring jacket 😎
Decided to do my ielts test at the British Council since its reputation is solid one. First time taking IELTS computer test but everything set up properly and headphones working good, no issue.
Staff also very friendly keep reminding what to do step by step so it's quite easy.
I did my IELTS here last week and was very satisfied. The booking process was smooth. Staff are very friendly and explain everything clearly. Room a bit cold but lucky I bring jacket la.

How to Choose the Best Secondary 1 English Tuition for Your Child?
In summary, finding the best Secondary 1 English tuition is not about choosing the most famous brand name or the most expensive option. Instead, it is about finding a teaching style, class format, and learning environment that matches your child's personality and academic needs. As your child navigates the challenging transition into lower secondary school, the right support can make all the difference in keeping their confidence high.
When comparing your options, keep these key factors in mind:
Choose a teaching format that matches how your child learns best, whether that is the highly personalised approach of one-to-one home tuition, or the interactive environment of a small-group class.
Identify where your child's specific English struggles lie, such as reading comprehension inference, summary writing, essay structure, or oral communication confidence, and pick a centre that specialises in those areas.
Look for tutors who provide detailed, individual feedback on essays and worksheets, rather than just handing out broad corrections or massive packages of practice papers.
Consider the logistics of travel times, lesson schedules, and your budget to ensure the tuition arrangement is comfortable and sustainable for your family's routine.
Ultimately, a good Secondary 1 English tuition programme should make your teen feel supported, capable, and confident. Once they have mastered the core answering techniques and critical thinking skills, secondary English will feel far less daunting, paving the way for a smoother, happier academic journey ahead.
