Choosing among the Top 10 Secondary 1 Social Studies Tuition Centres in Singapore can feel confusing when many humanities programmes begin only in upper secondary. At Secondary 1, children are still learning to interpret sources, explain viewpoints, organise evidence and discuss Singapore’s society with greater precision. The right support should strengthen these early habits rather than rush a child into memorising O Level answer templates before understanding the issues. This guide compares home tuition, small-group classes and humanities-focused programmes, while clearly identifying centres whose Social Studies provision starts at a later grade. Parents can therefore judge whether each option suits immediate Secondary 1 tuition needs, broader humanities development or future exam preparation, without assuming that every listed programme currently enrols Secondary 1 children.
Key Takeaways
Confirmed Secondary 1 Social Studies tuition is limited, so parents should verify grade eligibility instead of assuming every humanities programme accepts younger children.
Useful early support develops source interpretation, evidence-based explanation and discussion skills before introducing demanding upper secondary answering frameworks or extensive timed practice.
Compare tutor experience, feedback, class size, travelling time and fees alongside subject coverage, especially when choosing between home tuition and group lessons.
MindFlex – Your Best Platform for Secondary 1 Social Studies Home Tuition
Overview of Business
MindFlex Tuition Agency connects Singapore families with private tutors for Secondary 1 Social Studies home tuition rather than running fixed classroom programmes. Its network includes more than 50,000 active tutors covering secondary Humanities, including Social Studies, History, Geography and Literature from Secondary 1 to Secondary 4. Parents can request a tutor according to syllabus familiarity, teaching experience, budget, location, timetable and their child’s particular learning gaps. This individual matching may suit a child who struggles to interpret sources, explain different viewpoints or organise evidence clearly during lower-secondary humanities work. Lessons can follow current school topics and slow down where confusion persists, instead of requiring the child to keep pace with a predetermined group schedule. Families may review suggested tutor profiles before deciding whether a particular teaching style and rate feel appropriate.
Why Parents Choose MindFlex?
Parents may choose MindFlex when their child needs focused Secondary 1 Social Studies tuition without another journey after school or CCA. One-to-one lessons allow questions about unfamiliar social issues, sources and evidence to be addressed immediately, especially when a child stays quiet in larger classes. The matching service is free, and coordinators are available seven days a week to help families compare suitable tutors. Access to different tutor profiles also lets parents balance subject knowledge, patience, scheduling needs and cost rather than accepting one fixed classroom arrangement.

It has truly been a blessing to find Mr. Tan Tiam Teng as my son’s Chinese tutor. He is extremely knowledgeable, patient, and dedicated—qualities that have made a huge difference in my son’s learning journey. My Primary 4 son has shown remarkable improvement in his Chinese since starting lessons, and we are so grateful for the progress.
Beyond the academic results, Mr. Tan’s teaching style has built my son’s confidence and interest in the subject. He is punctual, pleasant disposition and understands what a child needs. The entire experience with Mind Flex has also been very pleasant, professional, and supportive.

Teaching Methodology
One-to-one tutors revisit difficult sources slowly, helping children explain evidence instead of guessing from isolated words.
Lessons follow current school topics, reducing confusion when classroom notes move faster than the child’s understanding.
Tutors model paragraph organisation and correct practice answers, providing immediate feedback on unclear or unsupported reasoning.
Individual pacing permits repeated questions about unfamiliar issues, building confidence before classroom discussions and school assessments.
Homework and test corrections guide lesson priorities, keeping support connected to each child’s demonstrated learning difficulties.
Location and Availability
Islandwide home tuition is available according to tutor location and schedule, while online lessons offer flexibility for children managing schoolwork, CCA commitments and limited weekday travelling time.
Price Range
Secondary 1 to Secondary 2 rates range from $30 to $45 hourly for part-time tutors, $45 to $55 for full-time tutors, and $60 to $85 for former or current MOE teachers.
Beyond individual home tuition, parents may prefer a classroom where discussion exposes their child to several interpretations of the same issue. MindFlex has collated the following centre information, together with current Google review widgets where available, to make comparisons easier. Because several programmes begin after Secondary 1, confirm enrolment eligibility and immediate syllabus fit before registering.
1. illum.e
Overview of Business
illum.e is an MOE-registered tuition centre whose humanities provision focuses on upper secondary and O Level Social Studies rather than a confirmed Secondary 1 class. Its programmes include Social Studies alone and combined humanities pairings with Geography or History, supported by structured strategies, in-house materials and targeted practice. An average teacher-student ratio of 1:8 may provide more opportunity for questions and feedback than a large lecture setting. Lessons use notes, infographics, mind maps, question analysis and examination-paper practice to make complex content and answering expectations more manageable. For parents researching Secondary 1 Social Studies tuition, the important limitation is timing, as the supported Social Studies course does not establish current Secondary 1 enrolment. illum.e may therefore be more relevant for later preparation, unless the centre confirms a suitable lower-secondary humanities arrangement directly.
Why Parents Choose illum.e?
Parents may consider illum.e when planning ahead for a child who will eventually need structured Social Studies examination support. The 1:8 average ratio and access to consultations may appeal when a child needs feedback on reasoning rather than another set of notes to memorise. Former MOE teachers or experienced educators form part of the selective teaching team, which may reassure families concerned about syllabus alignment. However, parents seeking immediate Secondary 1 tuition should first confirm that an age-appropriate Social Studies class exists, rather than placing a younger child into upper secondary material.
Before joining illum.e, I was scoring badly for GP up until promos in J1. I did not understand how GP worked and what was even required to score well in GP. After joining illum.e in J2, Mr Chia and Mr Yeo's lessons made me understand that GP was actually very much doable. Mr Chia and Mr Yeo would also always make the extra effort to help me mark and provide feedback on areas for improvement promptly. Would definitely recommend anyone considering a GP tuition centre to join illum.e!
I enrolled into Illume in 2024 in Mr Chia and Mr Yeo class at Jurong East campus, and throughout the 1.5 years in illume, I managed to improve my GP significantly through the structured classes and lectures. The lesson materials were useful since it provided easy to remember methods and strategies to tackle the broad subject requirements. Additionally Mr Chia and Mr Yeo were engaging and frequently put in the effort to make our lessons fun and interesting. Furthermore, Mr Chia and Mr Yeo would take time to consult with us and check our essay outlines or comprehension questions outside of lesson hours or during exam periods, even if they were very busy. Overall, illume has helped me not only in scoring an A for GP but also equip me with general knowledge about local and global affairs, which are valuable when entering the workforce in the future.
Mr Chia played the biggest role in helping me achieve an A for GP during my A Levels. Before attending his classes, I was completely clueless about how to write good essays, as the help given by my school teachers was too vague and confusing. I am very grateful to Mr Chia, who taught me how to use illum.e’s very own skill sets to dissect question types and keyword types, which are the keys to answering any type of essay question.
I truly appreciate that in every single lesson, Mr Chia made it a point to review every student’s answers and provide personalised feedback to target the weaknesses in our responses and teach us how to improve. I also liked that he engaged with his students in class to ensure that we were following him and to liven up the atmosphere. I was also pleasantly surprised when I wrote at least three additional essays for Mr Chia to mark and he returned them to me with fully annotated scripts showing where I could improve. Every piece of feedback was immensely useful. (He was not obliged to mark them at all.) This showed his dedication and responsibility towards helping his students.
As for comprehension, I went from barely passing to getting an A during prelims. Similarly, I would credit this improvement to Mr Chia. He was very encouraging, even when the class struggled to paraphrase certain words.
Finally, even though I only joined his classes in April of J2, I was able to see myself doing better in GP at school after applying the feedback Mr Chia gave. This shows how experienced he is in knowing exactly what his students need to do to perform better in the subject.
I 100% recommend juniors who feel uncertain about GP to join!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My English teacher, Mr. Chia from Illum Education (Jurong East), played a huge role in helping me achieve a B3 in my National Examinations.
When I first joined in mid-May, I was barely passing with around 50 marks. Even close to Prelims in late July, I was still stuck at 55 and extremely worried about my actual exams. After consulting Mr. Chia, the improvement I saw within just three weeks was honestly insane.
He didn’t just teach me content; he fixed my exam strategy. For Paper 1 (especially Situational Writing), I used to write the wrong things and overwrite. He taught me how to write less but include the right points to score higher. For Paper 2, I used to struggle to find answers in the passage, but after his guidance, it became much easier.
What really stood out was his care and dedication. Despite being busy, he still took time to mark my extra work and patiently answer my questions after lessons. He always checked in to make sure I had no doubts.
If you want results, Mr. Chia is the teacher you need. Highly recommended.
Mr Roger was my teacher at Illum.e. I joined midway through Sec 4, and many people questioned why I decided to start tuition so close to my O Levels. Previously, I believed I could self-study and still achieve a good grade for English. However, after receiving my WA1 and WA2 results, I realised my grades were declining from a C6 to a D7. That was when I told my mum that I needed tuition.
During my time at Illum.e, I learnt a lot from Mr Roger. He always took the time to explain every detail clearly, especially words or concepts that students were unsure of. Beyond that, Illum.e taught us how to approach questions based on what markers are actually looking for. This helped me understand how to answer effectively without overthinking or overwriting during exams.
As a result, I was able to manage my time much better in my actual O Levels. I am truly grateful to Illum.e and for my own hard work, which helped me achieve a B3 for my English O Levels.
My child’s English grade improved significantly from E8 to an A, and we are extremely grateful to illum.e.
After just one visit, we decided to entrust our child to the centre, and it proved to be the right decision. The staff at the Jurong East branch were warm, supportive, and professional, and Mr. Roger’s guidance made a tremendous difference. June felt comfortable and well-supported throughout her learning journey.
The materials provided were relevant and effective, and the team was always helpful and flexible in arranging make-up classes or alternative schedules when needed.
Thank you, illum.e, and especially Mr. Roger, for your dedication and commitment to our child’s O-Level success. We truly appreciate all your hard work.
I was a student of illume in 2025 ( I joined halfway throught the year) for the subject GP. I was taught by MrLiew and his lessons were wonderful. His lessons are always well prepared and MrLiew always make sure all his explanations are well elaborated in a way that is clear and easy to understand for everyone. MrLiew is also very patient and takes time to explain the mistakes that I and other students make. Before illume, I was very weak in GP and did not understand how to properly structure my essays, AQ and the SAQ formats, but thanks to MrLiew, I have a much much netter understanding especially for SAQs which really helped me improve in GP and i jumped 3 grades from mid years to prelims. MrLiew has greatly helped me in this short span of a few months!
Subjects Offered
Secondary English (Sec 1-4)
Secondary Humanities: History, Geography, Social Studies (Sec 1-4)
Secondary Humanities (Sec 1-4)
Teaching Methodology
Thinking Frames break question types into ordered steps, helping children understand how evidence supports a reasoned response.
Targeted practice exposes recurring mistakes, allowing tutors to correct weak interpretation before habits become harder to change.
In-house notes and visual mind maps organise content, which may reduce overload during demanding humanities revision.
On-the-spot feedback addresses unclear reasoning promptly, preventing inaccurate answer patterns from persisting between subsequent lessons.
Small-group teaching and consultations create questioning opportunities for children who hesitate to speak during ordinary school classes.
Location and Availability
Six campuses serve Jurong East, Novena, Bukit Timah, Marine Parade, Hougang and Tampines. Online or hybrid formats are also available for selected older-student lessons.
Price Range
Upper secondary Humanities lessons are priced at $80 for 1.5 hours. Families seeking Secondary 1 support should confirm both class eligibility and the applicable lower-secondary fee directly.
The Humanities Clinic specialises in humanities tuition, but its supported Social Studies classes serve Secondary 3 and Secondary 4 children rather than Secondary 1. Co-founders Ms Lynette Tan and Ms Teo Min Shuen have more than 15 and 10 years of teaching experience respectively, including curriculum development for Social Studies. Secondary classes are capped at eight, allowing discussion without removing the possibility of individual guidance on source-based and structured-response work. Its ECCE approach combines answering techniques, concise notes, critical discussion, case studies, homework and feedback. This format may suit children approaching O Level Combined Humanities who need clearer examination routines rather than broad content revision alone. Parents seeking Secondary 1 Social Studies tuition should regard The Humanities Clinic as a possible later-stage option and ask whether any suitable foundational support is offered.
Why Parents Choose The Humanities Clinic?
Parents often shortlist The Humanities Clinic because its small classes combine peer discussion with closer teacher attention. Step-by-step SBQ and SRQ frameworks may help older children who understand an issue but cannot convert their ideas into creditworthy answers. Current-affairs sharing also connects abstract syllabus themes with events, rather than treating model essays as scripts for memorisation. The clear caveat for Secondary 1 families is that regular Social Studies provision begins at Secondary 3, so immediate grade suitability must be confirmed before registration.
I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Ms Teo for her dedication and guidance in helping my son achieve As in both H2 History and General Paper in the A-Level exams. Ms Teo teaches him to think critically, structure his arguments and write with clarity and precision. Her materials are up-to-date and well-curated. More importantly, she is very attentive to student’s progress. She ensures they keep pace with school, identifies areas for improvement early and prepares them thoroughly for tests and examinations. For General Paper, Ms Teo’s lessons were equally impactful. Her lessons are structured, engaging, and focused on building both content knowledge and writing skills. There is very regular practice on Paper 1 essays and Paper 2 comprehension. This consistency helped my son improve steadily over time. Despite her busy schedule, Ms. Teo is always responsive to students’ questions and is willing to go the extra mile, especially in the lead-up to major exams. She creates a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and seeking help. I am deeply thankful for the impact she has had on my son’s learning journey. I would highly recommend Ms Teo to any student looking to excel in H2 History and General Paper.
I have been with The Humanities Clinic since sec 3 when I started having social studies and Geography classes with them. Now that I’ve graduated JC, and having had attended GP lessons by Ms Teo, I really recommend their classes. Ms Teo is extremely knowledgeable in current affairs and her GP lessons are always so informative and fun. Ms Tan actually taught me geo and Econs for a period of time and I also really enjoyed her lessons. If I were taking more Arts subjects, I’ll definitely join their other classes:))
The tutors here are super knowledgeable, patient and kind, and they definitely go the extra mile to ensure that you are well prepared for your exams!! They not only improved my understanding of the material, but also built my exam confidence. My grades saw a sharp improvement after seeing Ms Tan for H2 Econs and Ms Teo for GP :))
Miss Teo was truly a lifesaver during my A-Level journey. She guided me clearly through the new History syllabus, breaking down complex topics and exam requirements in a way that was easy to understand and apply.
Her notes were extremely high quality — concise, well-structured, and tailored exactly to what examiners look out for. The model answers she provided were especially helpful in showing me how to structure my essays and develop strong evaluation.
Most importantly, she helped turn a very lost and uncertain student into someone who eventually attained an A. I’m genuinely grateful for her patience, clarity, and dedication. I would highly recommend her if you are looking to improve your History grades.
Janice is taught by 2 dedicated teachers - Ms Teo (English) & Ms Tan (History, Social Studies & Geography). Under their effective coaching and using concise easy-to-understand notes, Janice managed an A1 for English, Combined Humanities and Pure Geography respectively. Ms Teo and Ms Tan have been a strong pillar of support to Janice during the O-Levels examinations period by constantly encouraging her and even provided her complimentary extra lesson time. I absolutely recommend The Humanities Clinic to all parents if their children need that extra boost of confidence to score better in their studies!
Subjects Offered
Secondary Humanities: History, Geography, Social Studies (Sec 1-4)
Secondary English (Sec 1-4)
Teaching Methodology
Step-by-step SBQ frameworks teach source handling systematically, helping children distinguish inference, purpose and comparison requirements.
Structured-response frameworks guide paragraph planning, reducing answers containing knowledge but failing to address the precise question.
Current-affairs discussions connect syllabus issues with real events, supporting flexible examples rather than memorised model responses.
Weekly homework receives feedback, allowing repeated weaknesses in explanation and evidence use to be corrected progressively.
Classes capped at eight preserve group debate while giving quieter children opportunities to receive direct individual guidance.
Location and Availability
Lessons are available at The Flow in East Coast and near Woodlands MRT, with live Zoom classes offering another option for families managing travel and weekday schedules.
Price Range
Secondary 3 and Secondary 4 Social Studies lessons cost $340 for four 1.5-hour classes. Lower-secondary small-group fees generally start from $320 for four lessons.
Ancourage Academy is an MOE-registered learning centre established in 2024, offering small-group academic tuition at its Bishan and Woodlands branches. Classes typically have three to six students, allowing tutors to notice when a secondary 1 child is struggling with source interpretation or structured responses. Its secondary curriculum covers selected Humanities subjects under Full Subject-Based Banding, although Social studies is not identified separately among its regular offerings. Parents considering Ancourage Academy for secondary 1 Social studies tuition should confirm whether lessons match their child’s school syllabus and subject band. Academic Director Min Hui brings more than 11 years of teaching experience to the centre. Students also receive termly progress reports, exam guidance and WhatsApp homework support, which may reassure parents seeking clearer visibility of their child’s progress between lessons.
Why Parents Choose Ancourage Academy?
Parents may shortlist Ancourage Academy because classes usually remain small, rather than placing a quiet child in another crowded classroom. Its ESB approach combines spaced recall, guided questioning and progressive scaffolding, which may support the content retention and reasoning needed for secondary 1 Social studies. Regular error analysis could help tutors distinguish between misunderstood sources, unsupported inferences and incomplete explanations. However, as Social studies availability is not specified separately, families should clarify the exact syllabus coverage before enrolling. This is especially helpful when a child needs targeted support instead of general Humanities tuition.
We’ve had a wonderful experience with this tuition centre. The teachers are incredibly patient and genuinely caring, which has made a big difference for my son. He feels comfortable asking questions and has grown more confident in his studies. I’m truly grateful for the supportive and encouraging environment they provide. Highly recommended!
Ancourage has been a wonderful learning environment for students who need both academic support and encouragement. The teachers are patient, approachable, and genuinely invested in helping each child improve. Lessons are well-structured, and the guidance given goes beyond just completing homework — they focus on building strong foundations and confidence.
It’s inspiring to see how much effort the team puts into refining their teaching methods and supporting every student’s growth. The steady improvement in students’ performance clearly reflects their dedication. Highly recommended for parents looking for a tuition centre that truly cares!
Started off as a trial class for my 5-year-old, and Teacher Angie immediately noticed her creativity and love for colours and concepts. We’ve been with the school for many months now, and my child truly enjoys every lesson. Teacher Angie motivates and guides her with such kindness — like an angel — helping her build the confidence and imagination to create her own ideas, even at just from 4 - 5 years old. This extra curriculum lesson is good for keeps and release their daily tension thru an artwork and a brush! Thank you Teacher Angie!
Ancourage Tuition has really helped me improve a lot, especially my confidence when answering challenging maths questions. The classes are effective and easy to follow, and the teachers actually make sure you understand what you’re learning. Teacher Min is especially great, super patient with me and always explains things clearly, even when I completely forget about basics i should by right already know. You can tell she really cares about her students. Definitely recommend this place if you want a chill but effective tuition. 11/10!⭐
I’ve really enjoyed my math tuition lessons with Teacher Min! She explains concepts clearly and makes even the difficult topics much easier to understand. I like how patient she is whenever I make mistakes, and she always gives helpful tips and step by step guidance. Her lessons are engaging, well-structured, and I’ve seen a big improvement in my results and confidence in math since joining her class. I’m very grateful for her support and highly recommend Teacher Min to anyone looking for a kind, dedicated, and effective math teacher! 😀

Teaching Methodology
Spaced recall revisits earlier content regularly, helping children retain key Social studies concepts beyond one revision session.
Socratic questioning encourages children to justify their interpretations, rather than giving unsupported answers based on surface details.
Guided examples show clear response structures before children attempt similar source-based and explanation questions more independently.
Error analysis identifies weak inferences, evidence selection and explanations, allowing feedback to address each child’s actual answering gap.
Progressive scaffolding gradually reduces support as confidence grows, helping children handle secondary 1 Humanities tasks with less prompting.
Location and Availability
Lessons are available in Bishan and Woodlands, while live online classes are conducted through Microsoft Teams. Both small-group formats may suit families balancing school hours, CCA commitments and travel time.

Humanities Club is a Bukit Timah tuition centre specialising in Social Studies, Geography and History for N Level and O Level preparation. Founder Joshua personally teaches Social Studies, including source-based case studies and structured-response questions across the upper secondary syllabus. Lessons emphasise content mastery, answer planning, the P.E.E.L. structure, model-answer review and careful time management. Teachers are described as former MOE educators with substantial experience, supported by qualifications from NUS and NIE. These features make Humanities Club relevant to parents planning for later Combined Humanities demands, especially when a child needs explicit explanation of why an answer earns or loses marks. Its regular grade range is not clearly defined, however, so parents seeking Secondary 1 Social Studies tuition should confirm whether the teaching is age-appropriate and currently available.
Why Parents Choose Humanities Club?
Parents may consider Humanities Club when they want a specialist humanities teacher rather than a general tuition programme. Step-by-step examples and practice papers can help children understand how source interpretation differs from simply retelling content. Onsite, online and hybrid formats may also reduce scheduling pressure when CCA or schoolwork makes weekly travel difficult. For a Secondary 1 child, parents should avoid introducing rigid examination templates too early and confirm that any offered lesson builds foundations before intensive N Level or O Level drilling.
I was failing both elect hist and pure geog and was constantly an e8/d7 student. However, in the last 3 months before o levels, I joined Humanities Club and eventually went from d7 in prelims to b3 for both elect Hist and pure geog. Mr Joshua, Ms Ellie and Mr Andy helped me alot and provided me with a lot of notes and helpful techniques to improve the way i answered the questions.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ My son improved from B3 (prelims) to A1 in O-Level Humanities after just 11 lessons at Humanity Club. Extremely grateful for the timely support and effective guidance. Highly recommended! 🥰
Recently my son have received his O level results, he is very grateful that his Hum/Geo got B3 which is over his expectation. He has been struggling for this subject since in his Sec 4NA and going to 5NA.
His result for this subject is always at the range of C5 to C6. However, after sending my son to Humanities Club to provide more help, he actually improve a lot. He mentioned the ways the tutor, Mr Joshua teaches are very interesting and able to engage him to understand the topics easier. He really shows his professionlism towards his teaching and wanting his students to improve and achieve better grade.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank him for the guidances and patiences. I strongly recommand parents to sent their child to Humanities Club for help before it is too late.
I am extremely grateful to Joshua and Ms Ellie for their outstanding support in helping me improve in Geography and Social Studies. Their lessons were well-structured, clear, and tailored to my learning needs. They explained complex concepts in a way that was easy to understand and always took the time to ensure I fully grasped the content.
What stood out most was their patience, encouragement, and consistent guidance in exam techniques, answering strategies, and time management. Because of their dedication and commitment, my confidence improved significantly and I was able to achieve an A1 for both subjects.
I highly recommend them to any student who wants to strengthen their understanding and perform well academically. Thank you, Joshua and Ms Ellie, for making such a positive difference in my learning journey.
Had a wonderful time in Humanities Club. The teachers were very patient and teaches really well. Managed to go from constant F9 to B3 in o levels. Really thankful for this tuition centre

The P.E.E.L. structure organises explanations coherently, helping children connect claims, evidence, elaboration and question requirements.
Model-answer review demonstrates adequate development while discouraging blind memorisation of paragraphs unsuitable for particular questions.
Timed SRQ practice develops pacing, helping children elaborate useful factors without neglecting other important response requirements.

LitHumanities Tuition provides lower-secondary Humanities support alongside O Level Social Studies tuition through Mdm Yu, an NIE-trained tutor with more than 15 years of experience. Her qualifications include a Master’s in Literary Studies from NUS, while teaching spans English Language, Literature, History, Geography and Social Studies. Lower-secondary Humanities provision is supported, although the specific inclusion of Social Studies at Secondary 1 should be confirmed before enrolment. For Social Studies, lessons use scaffolding, guided practice, answer templates, explained notes, time monitoring and timed inference work. This may help a child who reads a source but struggles to move from surface detail towards a supported interpretation. Parents should clarify whether a standalone Secondary 1 class or a customised combined-subject session best matches current school requirements, as several advertised programmes target older examination cohorts.
Why Parents Choose LitHumanities Tuition?
Parents may shortlist LitHumanities Tuition because one experienced tutor covers connected humanities disciplines and can customise multi-subject sessions. This arrangement may suit a Secondary 1 child facing overlapping difficulties in source work, historical context and written explanation rather than Social Studies alone. Scaffolding can make unfamiliar questions less intimidating, while guided practice allows errors to be corrected before timed work. Families should still confirm the precise Secondary 1 Social Studies coverage, lesson format and pace so broader humanities support does not drift away from immediate school topics.
Subjects Offered
Secondary Humanities: History, Geography, Literature, Social Studies (Sec 1-4)
Secondary English (Sec 1-4)
Teaching Methodology
Scaffolded questioning breaks complex source tasks into manageable stages, helping children recognise how stronger inferences are formed.
Guided practice pairs explanation with immediate application, reducing the gap between understanding techniques and using them independently.
Answer templates provide initial structure, supporting hesitant writers before they develop more flexible and independent responses.
Explained notes add context to key ideas, helping children understand issues rather than memorise disconnected factual points.
Timed inference practice monitors pacing, preparing children to produce supported answers within ordinary school assessment constraints.
Location and Availability
Tuition is available near Orchard MRT and at Tampines locations close to train connections. Weekday and weekend arrangements include single-subject or customised humanities combinations.

Learners’ Lodge operates the O Level Master programme, a secondary-focused tuition option with dedicated Social Studies classes for Secondary 3 and Secondary 4. Its Social Studies provision prepares children for the Combined Humanities examination through peer discussion, debates, timed work, concise notes and step-by-step examples. Scheduled classes contain between two and 16 children, creating a larger possible range than several boutique humanities classes in this comparison. Missed lessons may be replaced with another class taught by the same tutor when space permits, or supported through a Zoom recording. This flexibility can matter during busy school terms when CCA, illness or assessments disrupt attendance. However, no regular Secondary 1 Social Studies course is established, so parents seeking immediate lower-secondary support should confirm eligibility rather than relying on the broader secondary-school focus.
Why Parents Choose Learners’ Lodge?
Parents may consider Learners’ Lodge for later O Level preparation when a child needs both content revision and repeated examination application. Debates and peer evaluation can expose older children to alternative interpretations, while timed practice develops the discipline needed for source-based and structured responses. Replacement classes or recordings may reduce the learning loss caused by unavoidable absences. For Secondary 1 families, the main consideration is fit, as the confirmed Social Studies programme starts at Secondary 3 and may introduce examination pressure before foundational skills are secure.
Helloo Mr Yeo thank you for teaching me for the past one and a half years. I really appreciate all the hard work you have put into your teaching!! Your summary notes, the tips that you give, all shows the dedication that you put into your work. 😆 But beyond that, I really really enjoy the enthusiasm in the lessons that you give us. The tiny stories that you tell, about your life, and other little things. The jokes that you make 😂, really help to make the lesson that much more enjoyable and less stressful. So thank you for being such a caring and hardworking teacher!! 🙏🏻😝
Considering the fact that I never studied economics in JC, had zero prior knowledge of the subject, and only joined Learners’ Lodge with 6 months left to the exam, I think I can confidently say that Mr Phay is indeed a very wonderful teacher. I picked up the subject quickly under his mentorship, and I enjoyed each and every single one of his lessons as they were nothing short of fun and interesting.
Mr Gilbert Lee is a dedicated and passionate teacher who manages to get the best out of his students. His extensive knowledge of the A level Econs syllabus over many years of teaching has greatly helped to improve my grades, as well as inculcate a genuine appreciation for the subject! Strong class materials and friendly non-teaching staff at the centre makes attending class something to look forward to each week! Thanks LL!
Hi Mr Phay, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for restoring hope and confidence in my econs. For the short period of time I’ve been in your class for, i benefitted greatly, with your humour and your passion making every class one i look forward to. It has been such a joy attending your lessons, and im sure we are all truly grateful for that. have a great one!
Hi Mr Yeo, I would really like to take this opportunity to thank you for being such a great teacher. Ever since i joined you last year, physics had stopped stopped being a subject a dreaded, and it had become one that one that i truly enjoy doing. Your thoroughness, your effort, and your passion is definitely felt and appreciated by all of us. Your piece of advice, “don’t be mediocre” is one i hold close, which is what inspires me to constantly better myself. Have a great one! melvin
Thank you Mr Gilbert Lee for supporting me in my academic journey for H2 Econs and allowing me to eventually do well for the ‘A’ Levels! I still remember in J1 when I was unable to understand anything during the school lectures and that was why I decided to come to tuition. The notes and explanations by Mr Lee really helped me to understand what was required for the syllabus and how to improve my essays. Thank you also for the constant encouragement also that motivated me to continue to work hard for Economics even though I was not scoring too well in school. Most importantly, attending Mr Lee’s lessons was inspiring and eye-opening as he applied Economics to real life stories and would often share his opinions with us which was what I enjoyed most about the lessons and made me look forward to attending them. Thank you Mr Lee for the past 2 years!

Class debates require evidence-based reasoning, which may strengthen confidence when explaining contentious social issues clearly.
Timed practices develop answer pacing, reducing unfinished sections when children face demanding school or national examinations.
Step-by-step examples demonstrate response construction, helping children see where evidence, explanation and judgement should appear.

Brain Matter is a Bishan tuition centre offering Social Studies from Secondary 3 onwards, with separate provision for Secondary 4 and Secondary 5. Classes contain no more than five children, and one-to-one tutoring can also be requested across subjects and levels. Social Studies lessons use pre-teaching, wider contextual material, current developments, examination skills, time management and practice drawn from school papers. Its teachers are described as having more than 20 years of experience, including a pioneer MOE-trained Social Studies educator. These features may benefit older children who need context before they can interpret sources or explain competing perspectives convincingly. A regular Secondary 1 Social Studies class is not confirmed, however, so parents should ask whether one-to-one support can be arranged for their child’s current syllabus rather than joining an upper secondary group.
Why Parents Choose Brain Matter?
Parents may favour Brain Matter because classes of five or fewer can give quiet children more chances to ask questions and receive correction. Pre-teaching may reduce anxiety before difficult school topics, while current developments can make abstract social issues easier to discuss. Prompt parent feedback also helps families understand whether the difficulty involves content, interpretation, writing or time management. For Secondary 1 tuition, the most plausible route is a requested one-to-one arrangement, since confirmed group Social Studies classes begin at Secondary 3.
Mr Kelvin is very kind, and very patient. He explains things clearly and never gets frustrated, always helping me understand how to do the difficult math questions. His support makes learning feel encouraging and motivates me to do my best. 👍👍👍👍👍
Julie is always helpful to arrange the logistics. We are very thankful to her support and referral for good tutors. Mr Kelvin gave quick solutions to anchor my son’s learning and he is very caring to my son. Math from Fail to now he is like top 3 in class. Happy to see my son’s growing confidence and interest in Math! We have just started him with Mr Ronnie on science and found Mr Ronnie was able to grow his interests! We are very happy with our experience! 🙂
My son has just received his O level results. He achieved A2 in Emath and B3 in Amath. We are extremely happy with his results.
He only began Amath lessons with Mr Bernard in June 2025, 4 months before the O level. Prior to that, his results had been at D7 from Sec 3 to WA1 in Sec 4. For Emath, he started lessons in late Sec 2,before that, he was also consistently scoring in the D7–E8 range.
We are very grateful to Mr Bernard for his dedication, guidance, and unwavering support.
My son joined Brain Matter begining of the year for Ms. Sophia's English class. He has been very happy with the classes and I have seen him improve a lot as well. The class size is ideal and what I like the most about the classes is it's very student led in the sense that they ask the students what component of English to prioritise if their weighted assessments are around the corner. Teacher Sophia takes a personal interest in the students improvements, is approachable and gives personalised feedback as well. My son has improved a lot in his essay writing too. This has worked well for my son and we are continuing under the same teacher for next year as well. Keep up the good work Brain Matter team ! Would not hesitate recommending them! Big shout out to Ms. Sophia for being an amazing teacher ! Thank you!
My girl started to attend Brain Matter in Term 1 after attending Secondary School as she’s not able to understand the concepts taught in school. Average scores at PSLE (AL4), as she didn’t have tuition in Primary school. Pleased to see her results turnaround after attending Brain Matter Maths tuition for half a year, scoring an A1 at her end of year exams. She enjoys her lessons and Maths subject now.

Teaching Methodology
Pre-teaching introduces unfamiliar issues before school coverage, helping children approach classroom discussion with greater confidence.
Current developments add context to syllabus themes, reducing dependence on memorised examples that children barely understand.

Classes of five or fewer allow prompt correction when reasoning, evidence selection or time management begins slipping.
Parent feedback communicates progress and recurring weaknesses, allowing home support to remain proportionate rather than confrontational.

Bespoke Learning Centre offers MOE-aligned small-group tuition at several neighbourhood locations, but Combined Humanities begins at Secondary 3 rather than Secondary 1. Its supported programme combines Social Studies with History or Geography for Secondary 3, Secondary 4 and Secondary 5 Normal Academic children. Classes use source-based and structured-response practice, P.E.E.L., model essays, answer templates, topical worksheets and past-year papers. Groups are capped at eight, and enrolled children can access round-the-clock WhatsApp homework support when questions arise between lessons. Many tutors are described as former MOE teachers, which may appeal to parents concerned about syllabus expectations and examination phrasing. For immediate Secondary 1 Social Studies tuition, families should confirm whether any customised lower-secondary arrangement exists, as the regular subject offering currently targets children preparing for later national examinations.
Why Parents Choose Bespoke Learning Centre?
Parents may consider Bespoke Learning Centre for its neighbourhood branches, eight-child class cap and access to homework support outside lesson hours. Answer templates and P.E.E.L. guidance can help older children organise evidence when their responses remain descriptive or incomplete. MOE-aligned materials may also reduce mismatches between tuition tasks and school assessment demands. Yet these examination-focused methods are attached to Secondary 3 to Secondary 5 Combined Humanities, so parents of a Secondary 1 child should verify suitability and avoid assuming that general secondary tuition includes Social Studies at every grade.
Moved from Commit Learning to Bespoke. Compared to Commit, it different in below: 1. Teacher help practise the spelling and Ting Xie. 2. Open until 8pm (Commit 6:30pm), have air-conditioning. 3. Can fetch any time. (Commit if you late a minute have to wait hours for next slot to fetch kids, strictly no compromise) 4. Teacher more patient, talk loud to student but not shouting. (Compared to Commit teachers keep shouting at student) 5. My child is happier there.
If I could give zero stars, I would. Do NOT register your child at Bespoke Khatib. The level of negligence here is appalling. The teachers failed to pick up my daughter twice in two weeks. This isn't just a "mistake"—it is a recurring safety failure that shows they learn nothing from their errors. There was an incident happened on 30th Jan, Friday where they failed to pick up my daughter and her friend from the bus stop simply because they assumed there was no school, without even bothering to verify with the parents.
Similarly, another incident happened at 6th Feb, Friday, where they failed to pick up my daughter when she is alone.
Worse still, the management is a total mess. The Cluster Head, Bernard, doesn’t even know his new teachers' names, which points to a massive internal organisational issue. There is clearly zero respect for leadership and no communication.
To top it off, on the day of the incident, the teacher Qilah at the centre kept rejecting my calls instead of facing the situation. Teacher Qilah even said that she would take a photo of my child when my child was not picked up. At least, they should show some effort to find the kids that were not picked up. If you value your child’s safety, stay far away from this place as the teachers will not account who is missing.
In addition, the upper management fail to give an apology to the parents and only rely on Bernard, the cluster head to communicate. This showed a lack of respect to the affected parents regarding their mistakes in oversight for failing to correct the mistakes twice. I should not have believe they will change after the first incident. Please learn from my mistake.
Bespoke Learning Centre has been wonderful for our kid. Ms Natasha and all teachers are caring and friendly. My child feels happy and safe there. The teachers help with schoolwork which takes a huge load off for us parents. The students are also taught about the importance of chores. My child enjoys the food here. We are glad we found this student care centre.
I'm truly grateful for the care and attention Bespoke provides to my child, prioritizing his well-being and safety. I wholeheartedly recommend this centre, especially Teacher Natasha and Teacher Killa, for the exceptional care they give to our son.
I’m very happy with this student care centre. The teachers and staff are caring, patient, and genuinely attentive to the children’s needs. They not only provide a safe and comfortable environment but also help with homework, encourage good habits, and organise fun, engaging activities. My child has grown more confident, independent, and always looks forward to going. Highly recommended to any parent looking for quality care and guidance for their child.
At Bespoke, the teachers are both professional and knowledgeable, creating a supportive and engaging environment for learning. The staff are approachable and make the center a welcoming place for students. My child enjoys attending Bespoke for after-school care, and I appreciate the wide range of activities available, especially during school holidays. They also assist with homework and provide additional assessments, which has been incredibly helpful. Overall, Bespoke offers a fantastic balance of education and recreation, and I’m very pleased with the care and support my child receives.
Don’t recommend for this learning Center at wisteria mall. The teacher and staff and so call manager can’t give a answer 1st - teacher keep come late and make us wait 2nd - the admin staff change the teacher for the day without informing the student parent 3rd - for primary 1 math , they teach the kids by using calculator and is not the first time. 4th - the manager keep reject me to say to the higher authority.
Think twice if you gonna send your kids to here.

Secondary 1 tuition costs $250 monthly for four sessions. Parents should confirm whether that rate applies if suitable lower-secondary Social Studies support can be arranged.
Smartlab Education Centre has operated since 1999 and offers upper secondary History and Social Studies alongside Combined Humanities for Secondary 3 and Secondary 4. Its tuition approach uses the Exploration, Strengthening and Consolidation system, supported by structured notes, problem-based activities, examination worksheets and small classes described at a 1:6 ratio. Experienced full-time teachers provide personalised attention, practice and constructive feedback within this broader teaching framework. Smartlab also operates an examination-preparatory division, although parents seeking weekly Secondary 1 support should distinguish those intensive courses from ordinary tuition. More than 20,000 learners across major examination levels have attended its programmes since establishment. As Social Studies coverage is supported only for upper secondary, families should confirm whether an appropriate lower-secondary humanities class exists before treating Smartlab as a current Secondary 1 tuition option.
Why Parents Choose Smartlab Education Centre?
Parents may shortlist Smartlab Education Centre because its long operating history, structured system and several locations offer a familiar classroom model. Small classes may give children more opportunities for correction than large lectures, while problem-based work can make humanities ideas less passive. Structured notes and examination questions are likely more relevant when a child reaches upper secondary and requires Combined Humanities preparation. For Secondary 1, parents should first establish whether teaching covers the child’s actual Social Studies curriculum rather than assuming upper secondary expertise automatically extends to the earlier grade.
The lessons are well structured and teachers are open to consultations! After doing some research, smartlab is the most cost efficient in terms of price and quality, with lab provided and up to date teaching. If you are looking for structure and support even with 0 experience, this is the best place to consider imo.Smartlab also has a diverse student pool so study environment wise,it would require more adaptability and flexibility! Personally,I had to take on a new Alevel subject as a private candidate but I was able to manage thanks to Smartlab. Thank you to all the teachers who remained encouraging throughout this journey!
My daughter joined smartlab to prepare for O-levels, she took Science (Chemistry, Biology) and English at the centre. It was months of their guidance, termly assessments and feedbacks from teachers in preparation for the Os. She was able to get A2 in Science. The reward she gets from Smartlab every time she gets an A for the Science term assessment added to her motivation. 😁 She said that she was relying on the notes given to her by her teacher towards the exams and she was so thankful of it that she decided to keep all of it if she may need it in the future. She is so thankful to her teachers in Science, I am so thankful to them as well for keeping her more interested in the subject that she loves and helping her excel on it. As for English she may have not got better result that she wanted still thankful she was able to get passing grade for it.
This is from a parent’s perspective. It was not an easy decision to have my daughter retake her o levels because of the stigma of wasting another year. I knew and so did my daughter from before her prelims that aiming for the result she wanted to get into a school of her choice would be quite impossible. I already started thinking of alternatives and by God’s grace I found out about SmartLab Private School and had a long chat with Tony. After that the path was clear and even when the results were not out, my daughter was registered at the school. 1 year later, the results speak for itself. No tuition this time! Chloe won 2 awards for good performance as well! SmartLab is more than a school, it is a place for those who want direct their own direction in life. Thank you SmartLab for being the light in our lives when we most needed it.
I had a blast the past year studying at smartlab! Every teacher was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and patient. Any part of the syllabuses that I did not understand would be explained to me with patience and repeatedly if necessary without them showing any sign of frustration! Texting the teachers was always recommended if clarification on topics was needed. The classrooms were all kept clean and the teachers always came prepared and well equipped for upcoming lessons. They provided us with ample notes and practice papers to ensure no gap in knowledge whatsoever. Thank you to Mr Tay Tien Kiat, Mr Tan Wei Ee, Mr Collin Lim and Principal of the SmartLab Mr Tony Tan for their guidance and support throughout the year! Highly recommended for those considering taking A levels for the first time and for retakers as well!😊
I enrolled at Smartlab last year to prepare for my O Levels as a private candidate at the age of 24. Back when I was 17, I took my N Levels and completely flunked them. I had no interest in studying at all. My grades were English (4), History (Absent) and the rest ungraded (Math, Science, POA). Fast forward to last year, after studying with Smartlab, my O Level results were English (A2), Humanities (Social Studies + History) (B4), Business Studies (B3) and POA (B3). Although I didn’t manage to pass Math (D7), I think I did pretty well considering I hadn’t studied for almost 8 years. Smartlab’s teachers and teaching strategies were very effective, they managed to cover about four years’ worth of content in less than a year. Their resources and structured approach really helped me regain my confidence in studying. Special thanks to Mr. Collin, who taught me English, Social Studies and History. He’s extremely encouraging, patient and always willing to help. I often texted him late at night with questions and he would always reply quickly. Overall, Smartlab’s teaching methods, materials and supportive teachers made a huge difference in my learning journey. I’m very thankful for their guidance and would highly recommend Smartlab to anyone preparing for their O Levels.
Smartlab has truly helped me achieve my dreams! When I joined, I was determined to do well for my O-Levels, and thanks to the supportive teachers and their effective teaching methods, I was able to reach my goals. The environment was always encouraging, and the teachers genuinely cared about helping every student succeed.
Because of the foundation I built at Smartlab, I’m now pursuing my Diploma in Criminology at a private academy — something I’ve always been passionate about. I’m really grateful for the guidance, motivation, and belief that Smartlab gave me throughout my journey.
Thank you, Smartlab, for being such an important part of my success and for always reminding your students to believe in themselves! 🙏🎓✨
Thank you so much, SmartLab, for giving me a second chance to redeem myself for my O-Levels and allowing me to pass all my subjects with flying colours. My chemistry especially, have improved tremendously, from E8 to A2!! After many negative experiences in my former school, SmartLab completely changed my perspective on studying and learning.
The teachers here are incredibly kind, patient, and dedicated — they take the time to explain every concept clearly until you truly understand it. They never make you feel judged or left behind, and their encouragement really motivated me to keep going. You can also approach the teachers anytime after class if you still have any doubts. They also provide really good notes and you even get to do hands-on practice for your Science practical at their lab!
The learning environment is also very conducive — quiet, comfortable, and filled with people who genuinely want to learn and improve themselves. I always felt supported not only academically but also emotionally, which made a huge difference in my confidence and attitude toward my studies.
I’m truly grateful for everything SmartLab has done for me. It’s not just a tuition centre — it’s a place that helped me rebuild my self-belief and rediscover the joy of learning. Highly recommend to anyone who wants to do well and feel supported along the way!

Secondary English (Sec 1-4)
Secondary A Math (Sec 3-4)
Secondary E Math (Sec 3-4)
Secondary Math (Sec 1-4)

Secondary Humanities: History, Geography, Literature, Social Studies (Sec 1-4)
Secondary Combined Science (Sec 3-4)
Secondary Principles of Accounts (Sec 3-4)
Secondary Chinese (Sec 1-4)
Teaching Methodology
The Exploration stage introduces issues actively, helping children connect unfamiliar content with observable real-world social contexts.
Strengthening activities provide focused practice, allowing teachers to identify misconceptions before children attempt demanding examination questions.
Consolidation revisits essential ideas through structured work, which may improve retention across content-heavy humanities topics.
Problem-based learning asks children to apply knowledge, encouraging reasoned decisions rather than copying from prepared notes.
Small classes and constructive feedback create correction opportunities, helping children recognise weak evidence use and explanations.
Location and Availability
Tuition branches serve Bishan, Kovan, Marine Parade and Woodlands. Families can compare travelling time carefully, as confirmed upper secondary humanities availability may differ across locations and schedules.
Price Range
Parents should enquire with Smartlab Education Centre directly for the exact rates.
Inspire Education Centre, established in 2007, offers Combined Humanities support involving Social Studies with History or Geography, including a confirmed O Level Social Studies and History pairing. Its approach combines critical-thinking instruction, discussion, selected practice materials, individual homework marking and targeted feedback on weak areas. For Social Studies and History, Mr Ho uses a Skills Analysis Template alongside explicit answering techniques to make question demands easier to identify. Published outcomes include improvement in O Level Combined Humanities, although individual results should not be treated as promises for another child. Classes operate from Orchard and Marine Parade, with online teaching also mentioned. Because the supported information does not confirm a regular Secondary 1 Social Studies programme, parents should ask whether any lower-secondary class follows the child’s present syllabus before enrolling in broader Combined Humanities tuition.
Why Parents Choose Inspire Education Centre?
Parents may consider Inspire Education Centre when their child needs individual marking rather than general advice to write more detail. The Skills Analysis Template may help older children decode source-based demands systematically, while discussion can test whether their interpretation remains defensible. Access to two central or eastern locations provides some practical choice for weekly travel. However, a Secondary 1 family should confirm the intake age, lesson pace and syllabus coverage, as the clearest supported Social Studies programme prepares children for O Level Combined Humanities.
Teachers were knowledgeable and dedicated about the stuff they teach and were more than glad for any consultations outside teaching hours which were very helpful. Mr lim (science & math teacher) is probably one of the best teacher i have come across.
Secondary Humanities: History, Geography, Literature, Social Studies (Sec 1-4)
Secondary Science (Sec 1-2)
Secondary Principles of Accounts (Sec 3-4)
Teaching Methodology
The Skills Analysis Template breaks down question demands, helping children select appropriate responses before beginning writing.
Critical-thinking discussions encourage children to assess competing ideas rather than accept the first seemingly plausible interpretation.
Individual homework marking identifies precise weaknesses, giving children clearer direction than broad comments about insufficient detail.
Selected practice materials target examination skills, preventing excessive worksheet volume from obscuring recurring answer mistakes.
Personalised improvement tips connect feedback with action, helping children revise reasoning, evidence selection and presentation deliberately.
Location and Availability
Classes are held at Orchard Towers and Roxy Square in Marine Parade, with online classes also mentioned. Parents should confirm subject schedules and grade-specific availability before enrolment.
Price Range
Combined Humanities lessons cost $360 for four 1.5-hour classes, with monthly collection and prorating in five-week months. No trial lesson is offered.
How to Choose the Best Secondary 1 Social Studies Tuition for Your Child?
The best Secondary 1 Social Studies tuition should address your child’s present difficulties without pushing upper secondary examination routines too early. At this stage, strong foundations in source reading, viewpoint comparison, evidence use and clear explanation matter more than memorising model paragraphs. Consider the following points before committing to a weekly arrangement.
Confirm the exact grade coverage first, because many Singapore Social Studies tuition centres begin regular classes only from Secondary 3.
Identify your child’s specific learning gap, whether it involves understanding issues, interpreting sources, selecting evidence, writing explanations or completing work on time.
Match teaching methods to learning style, choosing guided one-to-one explanation, small-group discussion or structured practice according to how your child participates.
Review tutor experience and feedback practices, especially how answers are marked, misconceptions are corrected and progress is communicated without creating unnecessary pressure.
Compare class size, travel and scheduling, since long journeys after CCA may leave a tired child unable to benefit from otherwise suitable lessons.
Balance reviews, fees and programme fit, using parent feedback as context while judging affordability, subject relevance and whether a trial is available.
A thoughtful choice may be a home tutor who follows current schoolwork or a class that builds discussion and source skills at an appropriate pace. Ask to see sample materials and clarify the actual Secondary 1 syllabus before enrolling. The suitable option is the one your child can attend consistently, understand and respond to confidently, while leaving enough time for schoolwork, rest and family life. As most centre-based programmes in this comparison begin during upper secondary, families needing immediate Secondary 1 tuition may find personalised home tuition or a confirmed lower-secondary humanities arrangement more relevant than an O Level class.
Our home tuition rates are constantly updated based on rates quoted by Home Tutors in Singapore. These market rates are based on the volume of 10,000+ monthly tuition assignment applications over a pool of 60,000+ active home tutors.
